  1. I am well aware that specs cost money. I am also not asking for a Laptop that rivals my desktop in performance. as far as the weight, i already carry a backpack that is heavy enough to make my car think its a small person, I would rather avoid adding to that by too much more. I must admit I have looked into Apple, but I sacrifice the ability to game away from home if I wanted too. Like I Mentioned, i don't need desktop class graphical and processing performance, just enough power to do some light gaming on the go while still being able to be productive.
  2. This Inspiron (https://tinyurl.com/j2alm67) looks decent, has a 1050 ti and 256 gb of Solid State. Not too bad looking aside from the back and the bezels are a little bigger than i would have wanted, but the price is right at around $900. ( edit: I think linus just did a review on these actually) Alienware has become associated with gaming (even in non-gamer circles), and in a professional setting this is not necessarily a good thing, considering the logo on the back of the display, I think i will avoid that one. Its also necessary to consider that Dell and Alienware are basically the same company, just doing business under different names. I Like the dell, the HP got beat out by that, and the Alienware is not really an option. I am still looking for suggestions, but these are good so far! -Robert
  3. Smaller is better, 13" is my butter zone, but I am not apposed to a 15" if it meets most of the other requirements.
  4. Good afternoon Tech Community, I am a student in the mid-western United States, and seeking my education in Computer networking. I am looking for a well rounded gaming PC that could just as easily be used for my school work or professional life. here is what I am looking for: Requirements: Small form factor/ Slim Design Current or high-end previous generation CPU Discrete Graphics capable of 40 FPS or higher @ 1080p Give and take - These are things i can compromise on in most circumstances: Battery Size - Preferably at least 3 hours of heavy workload before needing to charge Screen resolution - At least 1080p, but I don't need much more than that as I am legally blind Keyboard Layout - I do not require a 10 key number pad, but i am not opposed to them I/O - Please don't suggest any Macbook style I/O, I need USB, HDMI, Ethernet, Etc. USB-C is nice, but I don't want to spend money on dongles i am going to lose. Budget - Stick around $1000, but if the performance to price ratio is in a systems favor, I am willing to put a bit more money out. Touch - I do not intend to use the touch-pad much, I will be buying a wireless mouse with this systems (I will take suggestions on the mouse as well). Touch screen is nice, but not necessary. Take - Things I do not want to see for this laptop: Large Bezels - I am not a fan of large bezels, they make the system feel too big and cheap, no matter how slim the actual system is. 2 in 1's - I do not need a flippy tablety thing, I am perfectly well suited for a traditional laptop experience Budget - The absolute most i am willing to spend on this system is $1500. I built my home rig in that budget, and i would be ashamed to spend so much on a laptop. Links, personal opinions, and purchase stories are greatly appreciated! -Robert
  5. You need to make sure that all of the cables you use are 4 pole 3.5mm jacks (have the 3 black rings). those extra contacts allow for the microphone I/O, and without it you wont be able to be heard by your party or the capture device.
  6. If you go to your setting and go to audio, find the chat setting and output to headset and speaker; this will get your party to be captured. otherwise I use an external Mic hooked up to my PC for myself, cause i am too lazy to het the chat link that the gentleman above linked. hope this helps!
  7. Well, you could always choose to get a decent air cooling heat sink, remove the fan and its silent (No Moving Parts) Silencio Products are a decent start otherwise.
  8. Status Update: Well I must say I was moderately surprised today. I I discovered that not only was my router cutting my speeds, but by a fairly significant amount. Speeds as follows: thru Router: 13/3 thru Modem: 27/5. I also discovered something else. The neighborhood switch is located just behind my house. I asked my next door neighbor who just got charter (he's a good friend) if I could test his speeds out of the modem. The difference was mind boggling. Out of his modem he is getting 120+ (peaked at 133) download and 5 upload. After doing some research I found out my modem is in fact outdated, and I am expecting charter to come replace it at no charge sometime on Friday. Once I have new speeds I will update! thanks again everyone! -Robert
  9. As a matter of fact, i am reviewing their webpage and I am shocked to see that they are now advertising "Speeds starting at 60 mbps". The only asterisk to be found is where they claim to be 20x Faster than DSL, and there is no subtext on the immediate page, no expanation of the asterisks, and certainly no mention of "Speeds may vary". As I mentioned, i am well aware of some of the issues surrounding cable internet, but at this point I am looking at blatantly false advertisement as far as my specific plan. Looks like I will be making a call soon.
  10. I will test this when I am able. In the mean time, any hardware recommendations for routers or modems? Will my ISP accept different hardware for the modem if i switch it out? Still so many questions!
  11. Oh, don't get me wrong, I am well aware of this. but even if I am simply able to verify that what I am paying for (allegedly) is not what I am getting and its NOT on my end, at the very least I could downgrade to a less expensive plan and maintain my current speeds at a fraction of the cost.
  12. Good afternoon my fellow Tech Junkies and Computer Nerds, Lately I have been encountering issues with my ISP - Charter Communications / SPECTRUM Internet. Now, it may be that I live in a moderately Rural area, but my "High Speed Connection" which is supposedly rated at 30 mbps has only been reaching from 11 to 17 mbps on download and 6-9 mbps on upload, Do not get me wrong, its much faster than the only other competitor in the area (ahem Centurylink at 7 down and maybe 2 up if your lucky), but I am paying a fair amount of money for a 30 mbps speed that i am not getting. Now, before I go out and start accusing Charter that they are overcharging me for services. here are some of my ideas and primary questions: I know, after watching this Techquickie episode (Cable vs. DSL) that my speeds may be partially dependent on if my neighbors are using the same service as me, but my neighborhood is fairly small, so i cannot imagine that I would not imagine that it is causing such a sharp drop in performance. Is my modem or router bottle-necking my speeds? The modem I have was provided by Charter, and the router I use is a Belkin AC720 Wireless (the speeds I quoted above are over a wired connection from the router). If the problems may be caused by the modem or router, is there a way to test the speed directly from the modem (if potential issue is router) or some device that can test the speed from the wall (bypassing or eliminating the modem as variable) If (I know, a lot of 'if's') I find that there is a problem with the modem or router, are there any hardware recommendations as replacements. And finally, If charter is the problem, is there any way of going about either getting my speed boosted at little to no charge, or getting them to reduce my bill and/or reimburse me for not delivering on their false speed claims. I know, this is a pretty tall order, but with this information I hope to not only better my own internet standing, but help those who may be having similar issues. As always, any advice and/or opinions are welcome! Thanks! -Robert
  13. The $200 cards are not available in many areas still. in any case you still have t build a system around that card, and its going to be very difficult with only around $270 USD. Good card dont get me wrong, but its not practical for a $550 build.
