  1. I think everything is fixed! I just ran this machine through everything that would have made it crash in the past (including running a video on the secondary monitor while gaming for 2 hours... System ran perfectly.
  2. So I just finished an installation of Windows 8.1 Pro (One good thing about 24Hr Wal-Mart) and the system seems stable. Just spent the last 2 hours setting Windows 8 up - it doesnt seem too bad after putting a start menu back into it, and gutting the "Metro UI" out of it... Running Skyrim for a bit to see if it is stable.
  3. Port channel two ethernet ports together for data to my NAS / Server. Setting up a sub network with VLANs for my neighbors. Much faster switching capabilities than you can get from home network equipment. And I have 6 people living in my home... Well 5, the latest edition to the household has not joined us just yet. Have another 6 weeks till his delivery date. I know from experience that home network equipment can not keep up with my network load. None of my equipment is wireless other than the single AP that I allow my neighbor to use. She is on fixed income... and this allows her to have internet, so that she can stay in touch with her family. We are both agreed on wireless. The fastest wireless still has not even reached the performance levels of a single wired network connection. I would suggest spending the money on the wired side of the network... Look at the WRT1900AC to fill in the network needs for now - and get all the rest of your gear off of wireless (especially desktops). The reason I have such high end wired equipment is because I know the hardware... Like I stated earlier I do this for a living. You dont spend the time to go through the Cisco bootcamps and spend the money to get CCNA certified without having a love and a passion for networking. For someone that want s a good solid network at home - and doesnt have a very high network demand - The Linksys WRT1900AC would be a great router. Add to that spending a few hundred to get the house wired for ethernet would also not be a bad idea.
  4. The WRT1900AC would be an excellent choice for a home under 1500 Square Foot. However, if you are going to have a lot of issues with your wireless (please do not game on wireless) then it may be worth looking into a higher end AP solution. If you are going to go for an AP solution the Ubiquiti APs are some of the best out there. Cisco, and Motorola APs are also excellent... but they are geared more towards the Enterprise user. Investing in a strong fast network is something that a lot of people dont understand, or are unwilling to do - usually due to the costs involved. Then again, most people dont understand that a high end switch can make a connection from TCP/IP Layer 1 move data to Layer 8 in less than 2 microseconds. that is 2 millionth of one second. While cheap home use equipment will struggle to keep data switching to under 1 millisecond - that is 1 thousandth of a second. Most of my friends think that I am mad because I have a Cisco WS-C3560G network switch, and a Juniper 3400 Router w/ a DOCSIS 3.0 Mini-PIM installed. Yes, that network cost me nearly $5000 dollars. However, I do not feel that I will ever need to upgrade anything in my network ever again. This kind of equipment will run for 10 - 20 years without failure as long as they are kept on clean power. Good luck to you... Whatever you decide to do, your options are not limited. Read reviews... don't worry about buying used enterprise Cisco equipment... they rarely fail (this is what I do for a living as a Network Engineer.
  5. Dont think that is an issue with the switches, sounds more like a failure of the circuit board.
  6. 8GB of very high speed memory... Do not cheap out on the memory.. Use something like G.Skill PC2400 2x4GB or something.
  7. Looks a lot like that... I am running on a fresh install of windows with 14.4 drivers. I found a thread on another site that showed how to expand the .sy_ file from the driver package into a .sys file for the System32/drivers folder... So I replaced the file and rebooted back into windows about 15 minutes ago. So far everything has been good. Only time will tell if that fixed anything. Video card temps have been getting pretty high, I have a new case coming in the mail tomorrow. That should solve the temperature issues. I really hate to replace my current case, as I really like it a lot. The Silverstone FT03 is a beautiful case... But, t doesnt have the greatest air flow. The Corsair Air 240 has a LOT more air flow... also ordered 4 x AF120 fans, and 2x SP120 fans to put into the case.
  8. From BlueScreenViewer Looks like it is the Driver....... Or the card Filename: atikmdag.sys Address In Stack: atikmdag.sys+28ece From Adress: fffff880`0f044000 To Adress: fffff880`0ff54000 Size: 0x00f10000 Time Stamp: 0x53508a3c Time String: 4/17/2014 9:13:16 PM This BSoD happens in game, out of game, playing videos, or just sitting there at idle. System worked perfectly with the Radeon 7850...
  9. It just blinks the BSoD for less than a second when it BSoDs... otherwise it just locks up, and the screen pixilates. I ran Valley Benchmark for nearly 2 hours without a failure... so, I am at a loss. Maybe it is just the card is bad.
  10. OK, so I uninstalled my old Radeon HD 7850. Removed the drivers, ran the driver cleaner, and installed my new Gigabyte R9 290x. Gaming runs well but occasionally the system locks up and blue screens. So after troubleshooting everything I was unable to locate what was causing the blue screens. After much troubleshooting I switched the fans on the Gigabyte R9 290x to Uber mode so that it wouldnt get so hot. That seemed to help at first - but, I am still getting random restarts. Since I couldn't find what was causing the issues I went ahead and wiped my SSD, and reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OEM back on the SSD. I am still getting random lockups and BSoDs. Can anyone think of what may be causing these issues?
  11. Mod24: “3 Teams. 24 Hours. 1 Champion” The live competition begins at 6PM PDT on September 18th. And yes I will be there.
  12. 7/10 Would be higher if there was a better CPU in that system.

of all the viruses why must it be a russian one?

So you were chillin' and watchin' some porn... and got a virus. I understand that.
  14. I actually found out about this site through the WAN show. Found the WAN show by stumbling upon it from another site... My favorite videos... and the ones that I look forward to for most of the week is the WAN show itself. I guess that I still have a soft spot for the WAN show, and the AfterParty. What pulled me into joining this community, and then actually helping to sponsor it... was the people. Most forums are full of complete douche nozzles, but this site is different. Linus I know that you have said thank you to us... the end users. Truth is that we should be saying thank you to you for the community that you inspired.

More to the point - What were you doing that was shady enough to catch a Russian Virus?

    Why not a Russian one?
  17. Ok guys and gals... I am looking for a case that has to fill a few tick marks... Hoping someone out there knows exactly what I need. Currently I am using the Silverstone FT03. I love this case but it does not have enough air flow. 240mm radiator support is a must Depth of case cannot exceed 15" Width of case cannot exceed 11" Height of case cannot exceed 4 fraking feet?! OK, so the height doesn't really matter. Needs to be able to support a full ATX PSU. Needs to be able to support an 12" video card. Needs to be able to support at least 1 SSD and 2 3.5" HDDS. Money really doesn't matter as long as it is ridiculous... 200 dollars or so should be enough. The case must be well constructed, and black. Thank you to anyone that can think up a case that falls into the categories. Of the cases that I have owned in the past I appreciate the build quality of Silverstone, and Lian Li.
  18. If the iPhone is a Mercedes it an A 180 CDI for the price of an SLS.
  19. Personally I bought a used R9 290 windforce edition card for 250 dollars USD. You cannot get a 780 for that price... I am stunned by the performance of the R9 290. I would say that you cannot go wrong with either card... but the R9 290 is less expensive and therfore the winner in my book.
  20. I recommended a monitor at work based on a monitor that Linus reviewed. I received the monitor that I requested Tuesday... OMG! Linus was absolutely correct. The LG 29UM65 is FREAKING amazing!
  21. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899261023 these are a great option for testing power supplies. If you have a paper clip, and a volt meter you can do an unloaded test... but not a full load test.
  22. Sounds like a failed power supply... or that one of the GPU power connectors is plugged into the secondary power header on the motherboard (if you did that you have a dead motherboard). And do try to get your initial power on done outside of the case.
  23. Is this only impacting USB 3.0? May need to uninstall the USB drivers, and complete a re-install from safe mode. Hopefully, you will be able to repair windows without re-installing the OS.
  24. Dell Vostro 1500 from work. Laptop held up for 6 years without a single issue.
