  1. Thanks to all for the responses! I guess this isn't something that's all that unusual after all. I think I'll go with the unraid route, and pass the 5700 XT through to windows as suggested by @Master Disaster. I'm fine with a more technical route. I likely won't do this for at least a year more. With the current GPU squeeze, it would be pretty silly of me to give up what's currently my only gaming rig. My primary concern was whether this was feasible with COTS software products, and without a crazy amount of hassle. You guys have confirmed that for me - thanks!
  2. Hi folks, I'm interested in setting up my current PC as a living room gaming machine which will also host several dedicated game servers and potentially a music streaming server. This machine has always been intended for this eventual purpose. I'm new to the server thing. I can follow instructions for setting up a Plex server or whatever, but I'm wondering whether my machine will be capable of running a music streaming media server and a couple of game servers and a living room couch gaming / potentially VR setup. The other thing is that I only ever need to see the windows side from the living room. The user never needs to see the server side. Here's the build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/infinitymdm/saved/xdMjcf I currently use this as a desktop PC for gaming and development. My girlfriend did some painting on the front and back panels, so it's a real showpiece (this is also part of the reason I want it to be a living room PC). It's configured to dual boot Windows 10 and Solus Linux. Windows boots from the Samsung M.2, and Solus boots from the Corsair drive. The Samsung 2.5" is split between the two so that each has 1Tb of SSD storage. I'd prefer to use Linux for everything, but as I also play games, Windows is a necessary evil. What I need help with is how to set this all up. I know that most of the game servers I want to run will do better if run from Linux (I'm looking at ARK Survival, Terraria, Minecraft, and maybe a few others). However, the games I want to play from the couch mostly run on Windows. I'm not sure how I need to approach this. Is virtualization a good option? Should I just stick with windows? Are there other better options that I haven't considered yet? I have a few questions here: Is my hardware up to handling these three tasks simultaneously? Will 1Gbps networking be enough to handle multiple game servers (probably not more than 10 users each) plus a music streaming server? What software recommendations do you guys have? I get that I probably haven't done a perfect job of describing what I'm trying to do here. I'll continue to update this to make things clearer as questions are raised below. Thanks for any help!

  5. He glasses? I know a few people who glass. Sometimes I glass. Glassing isn't something to be done all the time, however.
  6. I own all of those except a microscope, but I have pretty good eyes. My soldering iron could certainly have a finer tip -- the end rounds off when it's about 1mm across. I've never needed anything more than that in the past; do you think I will need something better before attempting this?
  7. I've been having charging issues with my Nexus 6 (Model XT1103) for some time now. I've done a little bit of testing (using cables I know work, etc.) and have determined that the micro-USB port on my phone is the issue. I know that the port itself is soldered onto the motherboard, but I have a reasonable amount of device repair and soldering experience and I own good tools for the job. So my question is this: how difficult is the process of replacing the micro-USB port, and are there any tricky parts I should know about? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
  8. Okay. I have solved a few of my problems, I think. Front Panel I/O I want several things on the front panel, including USB 3.0, power and reset switches, and a drive activity LED. I've found a kit on Amazon from SODIAL that has switches and LEDs. I plan to buy white LEDs to replace the included red and green ones, because this is a computer and not a Christmas tree. I also plan to CNC a power button from wood and mount the power LED inside of it, so that the power button itself will light up when the system is on. All that should cost about 5 bucks total. As for front panel USB, I've found a 9 dollar kit that has 2 USB 3.0 ports and plugs into the mobo header. So i will be purchasing that. Total: $14 Airflow I retook some measurements and determined that my current airflow solution should be just fine. The case will have positive pressure, and my intake looks pretty elegant, so that's all good. I'm getting a couple of Noctua fans. Speaking of fans, what is a good material to use for dust filtration? I can't have my fancy new case letting dust in, now can I? Total: $32 GPU Mounting I haven't a clue. Halp. This is the one problem I don't know how to solve. How does one securely mount an EVGA GTX 1070 Black Edition graphics card? Will the two bracket screws be enough to hold it in place? I need answers, and I need 'em fast. I'm on the verge of purchasing materials and beginning the fabrication process. Total:??? Anyhow, I'm almost finished with a very basic 3D mockup of this thing in Autodesk Inventor. I will upload a few shots of that here as soon as I get it finished. Thanks again to all for the suggestions, and a particularly big thanks to @Droidbot for the power switch vid. Very helpful. Nuff said.
  9. Okay, but seriously. I do have some problems I need a bit of help with. Any suggestions for GPU mounting, airflow, and front panel USB?
  10. Wot in 5 1/4 inch drive bay configuration
  11. Yeah, I figured. I think I'm happy with my USB's. I have very little necessity for disk media these days, so I will be satisfied in the absence of a disk drive.
