  1. Thank you. I realize that some sort of business solution may be in order. The only major downside is rack mounting...I do not have an rack to mount anything on...but if a rack mount option is the best ill just figure it out.
  2. All, ATT is rolling out a couple of new services in my area in the next month or so. I will be able to get 2Gbps or 5Gbps speeds up/down. Currently I am using the modem/router supplied by ATT and they will give me an upgrade when the new service rolls out, but they are limited by the features they offer. I am looking for recommendations for a router that will support the up/down listed above. Needs to be a desktop version as I do not have a rack to mount anything like that at home. Does not need wifi capability built-in but that would be a nice feature to have (AX would be great so our laptops would get better signal). Any additional features it may have will be a bonus that I can use to help control and manipulate my home network...as long as it supports the speeds above (at least the 2Gbps) and I can change the DNS. The ATT modem/router/wifi gizmo is very limited on what you can do with it. Additionally a lot of stuff is locked down because of the way ATT works...very specific settings to support their home TV/Phone/Internet...I do not have the TV/Phone but I still cannot make changes regardless. Thanks Dan
  3. Nothing fancy. Most of the time it will be one VM running, just trying to keep things clean and separated from the rest of the os.
  4. All, I am putting together a budget build under 1k. Play Games Virtual Machines I want to be able to create a couple VMs so I can setup coding environments. Won't run more than one or two at a time. Looking at the following; i5 8400 or i7 8700 16g RAM GTX 1050ti w/4g or GTX 1060 w/6g Is the CPU a good choice? Will it work for VMs? I thought 1060 over the 1050ti would be an easy choice but I am unsure about the cards. I realize that the price difference between the CPU's and video cards is ~110 but that is a lot when you are trying to stay on budget. Thanks for any help you can give (had to change CPU supposed to be 8700 not 8400)
  5. Thanks for the help. It looks like the cards are fairly cheap so Ill give it a try with no regrets.
  6. 6+ years ... we are unable to upgrade for various reasons so I am trying to make due with what we have.
  7. So the computer will support USB 3, if I install a card, even though the motherboard does not? Does this also include a thunderbolt card as well?
  8. All, My wife has something similar to this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0743BF8TK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0743BF8TK&pd_rd_wg=2twQQ&pd_rd_r=FCY8EE4D81V8391AJ5YK&pd_rd_w=NHSgT for her work. She wants to plug it into our computer at home (instead of her work laptop) to access the files. Our computer is kinda old, but functional... The docs for the motherboard say the following; Expansion Bus Bus type: PCI 2.3, PCI Express 1.0A, SATA 1.0 and 2.0, USB 2.0 PCI Connectors x 2, 124 pins, data width 32 bits PCIe connector 1, 36 pins, 1 PICe lane PCIe connector; one x 16, 164 pins I have two open slots in the computer. I want to install either a USB 3 card or even something that would support type c or even thunderbolt 3. Is this even possible? I want to get the best transfer speed possible here so using the built in usb 2, is doable, but not preferred. Also nothing in the docs says anything about USB 3 or thunderbolt. Also I realize that the link above is for a USB 3 device, the thunderbolt question is for my own curiosity. Thanks
  9. I would like to win one of the keyboards. Why? Because my keyboard sucks!
  10. Black Kova for me. Why should I win...I have not had a new mouse in over 3 years
  11. We have been talking to my son about some of the things pointed out here. One question that has come up is "up time". Are there issues with a laptop if it is left on for extended periods of time? Unsure why this would be done as it does not make sense to me for a laptop... So what is the downside or issues with leaving a laptop running like you would a typical desktop? Thanks
  12. desktop does not work. Limited living space and mobility requirements. I apologize for listing the budget that we had settled on I did not realize that it would be such an issue. My wife and I looked at several high end laptops and decided that we would double the total cost. We wanted to make sure we covered sales tax, multi-year service plans, accessories, additional software etc. etc etc. I realize that 8k is more than enough to cover this, we just wanted to give ourselves enough of a budget to where we would not have to compromise on anything for the purchase
  13. 8k may sound like a lot, and I am sure that it is. But my wife and I decided that we wanted to make sure we budgeted enough to get everything that he would need for this machine, this will also include any service plans and additional software etc. And yes it says contradiction.
  14. All, I am in the market for a new laptop. Think along the lines of a desktop replacement that can play games, watch movies and music mixing/dubbing/recording. I have a solid budget to work with, looking at 8k or so fully setup with all the bells and whistles that go with it. Prefer something that does not require an external box with GPU inside. Any suggestions here would be appreciated. Thanks
