Yea a standard DVD drive is like $20 without a sale, I recommended the BlueRay just because there has been talk of games coming on blueray in the future BUT, most games are going to be downloaded from online so it makes no difference what so ever so definetly I agree the standard DVD drive will work perfectly fine. He can always upgrade down the line if it becomes nessecary.
As for a mother board I would recommend
Asus z87 Pro
MSI z87 MPower
Asus Z87 Expert
Also just as a side note, I absolutly love the Asus Maximus VI Hero but it doesn't come with wifi that is a $50 add on I think.
I leave mobo selection up to you but I will say I just built a comp for a friend using the MSI MPower z87 and the OC Genie made a very easy basic overclock which was all he wanted, had wifi and bluetooth for various components and very user friendly.
I have another friend I helped build a comp for that used the Asus Maximus but that is going to be a little more. Very sweet, just a little harder to utilize, can't say I love it enough.

Motherboard + CPU: Number 1 (3570K so he can overclock :P)
Any brand of ram 8Gb 1600Mhz
SSD and HDD look good
PSU: Corsair TX650M or other good brands like: Antec, Seasonic etc.
Mini GPU is awesome.
Mouse: Corsair M65 FPS mouse

This will max out anything you throw at it. Will last long and it's more than just gaming build.

Corsair vengeance 2000 wireless headphones are awesome. If he is not going to over clock then yeah non k edition and then you can grab the H77 model of the motherboard and save more money. BF3 w/ dlc is like 35+GB so if so upgrade so like 256gb raid 0
