If a car runs low on gas, we don't take it to the mechanic to have the low gas light disabled, we fill it up with gas.

When we get hungry, we don't go to a doctor to have that sensation disabled with drugs, we eat food.

When we encounter a problem or a need, we don't assume it's a mistaken false positive that needs to be covered up and "fixed", we understand that it is a signal describing a very real unmet requirement, and we address it, and it's very good that we do because without that mentality, the road would be littered with abandoned vehicles and everyone would have starved to death.

This, I think, is obvious and very well understood, and yet, there is one area where this understanding is painfully absent: depression.

Yes, some people have a legitimate biological issue which requires medication, but by and large, for most people this is not the case.  For most otherwise healthy normal people, depression is not a defect or a malfunction to be covered up with drugs, it's a valid signal indicating the existence of a real problem.

To put it simply and bluntly, if life and the world in general is shit, you will feel likewise

Shocker, I know, but also as I said earlier, I think everyone intuitively understands and respects this very obvious fact.  It's simply not taken to heart often enough, mainly (I think) because no one feels they have the knowledge or ability to actually fix the issues that people they may know are suffering from.  It's easier to just slap pills on it and move on with life, but we can't do that.  Remember my example from the start of this post.

Spoiler

This video essentially talks about the same thing and was the inspiration for this post.  I could say that I just took the ideas and re-wrote them in my own words, but really I've believed and understood this for years already, it just so happens this has now come along to say the same thing I was already thinking.

I should also just say in case anyone is wondering, I am lucky to not be suffering with any issues of this nature myself.  It's just an important topic I felt like sharing because I have seen it up close from many angles.
