A quick summary of and guide to IP ratings:

IPyz

y is for dust

5 means dust gets in but it still works fine

6 means dust can't get in

z is for water

5 means you can run it under the kitchen sink
6 or 9 means you can hose it down roughly in the back yard

7 or 8 means it'll survive in shallow water for a short while

An extra K on the end means a bit tougher

Anything less is less, more doesn't exist.

If either one is an X it means they didn't test that.

If they claim more than is mentioned here, it might be true but the code doesn't guarantee that.

These interpretations are approximate and not literal.

If this doesn't help then you have something weird and you're gonna have to actually read this table: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code#Code_breakdown

why thank you. i haven't bothered to look it up for like never, this will be etched in my mind from now on for many years. ? very noice!

  2. AlTech

What about the IPx3 rating for water resistance?

  3. vanished

Less is less ? Basically I don't consider anything I didn't mention to really be worth anything and I don't think those lower grades are very common anyway

  4. AlTech

Pretty sure the original Pixel series were IP53

Well if I had to give an interpretation I'd say 3 means you can safely use it in the rain and 4 is similar but a bit tougher

But with that said I've used a few phones in the rain and in humid rooms where touching it leaves significant condensation and not had any issues so I feel most devices are probably ok with this even with no formal rating provided you don't explicitly try to soak open ports, etc. Hense why I feel the lower ratings don't add or tell you much
