So I was doing some preliminary benchmarking with my RX 480 eGPU. I ran Unigine Heaven at with OpenGL, at 1440x900, on Ultra, 2x AA with no Tessellation.

So as you can see, the x4 PCIe configuration and latency of Thunderbolt 3 cripple any GPU you put in it. Of note is that the fan on the 480 hardly gets to ramp up. Probably because so much of it's potential is wasted with Thunderbolt overhead.

    Is it the X4pci or the TB3 that is the issue?  I thought this was a pretty common thing to have working these days.

    eGPUs work, but Thunderbolt 3 has so much overhead and latency that this is what you get.
