So my Desktop has a little ol’ 4690k stuck on a mITX Z97 board with dual channel DDR3. Obviously not ideal in 2018. 4C/4T is fine for gaming while watching YouTube and on Discord, but that’s about it.
After AMD launches 3rd gen Ryzen, do you think 1st gen Ryzen would be a viable option? Or does the 4690K have a tangible IPC gain over, say an R5 1600? Would ponying up for 2nd gen over 1st gen be a better deal?
Btw I finally decided not to upgrade my iPhone since my 6s Plus is still so strong in 2018 and figured I’d update my aging desktop.

The 4690K usually matches the 1600 in most games, but the value is still there for getting the 1st gen Ryzen, especially in heavier productivity.
Rumor has it that the 3rd gen will work in 1st gen boards (I'm not on the up and up), so that's what I would do if your friends have a 1600 you can update the BIOS with. Getting the 3rd gen boards should bring out the most they can do.
tl;dr: Just migrate to AMD, even the 1600 is still a good upgrade.

Meh, not a big fan of 300 series msi. I would get the b450

From my own research as I was considering this same upgrade before (ended up with 8700K, then won an 8086K), the 1600 would be a side-grade over the 4690K in things like gaming, but at the same time, the additional cores/threads are much better for multitasking and productivity, making the 1600 a huge upgrade over the 4690K for that.
It depends on what you value more, but if you multitask heavily then just about any 6c12t CPU will be a massive upgrade over a 4c4t one.

@DrMacintosh As someone who went from Haswell i5 to Ryzen 1st gen, the IPC is somewhat higher than Haswell.
Although the increased core and thread count is a lot more noticeable
