  1. I just tested the exploit on my 10.8.5 machine (with all the patches). With my (admin rights) user, it succeeds in creating the setuid root binary.no big deal, as admin can simply sudo su to become root at any time. For a Standard User, it fails with Segmentation fault, and does not create the new file. For a Managed User, it also fails with Segfault. I won't be able to test my 10.9 machine until Sunday, but I suspect that if they fixed it in Mountain Lion, then they also fixed it in Mavericks. EDIT : The way the code works is different between 10.8 and 10.9, so I can't assume anything yet. EDIT 2 : 10.9 is vulnerable, and probably 10.8 too (just the author hasn't developed same workaround for older 10.8 and 10.7) ------------ OTHER NOTE for those who haven't installed 10.10.3 patch yet - if you have a BIOS password, REMOVE IT before installing the patch, or IT WILL BRICK YOUR SYSTEM. (Seriously, did Apple fire all their good OS programmers after Mavericks was released?)
  2. Looking into it some more, but I suspect some FUD involved in this story - I have both Mac OS 10.8 and 10.9 machines that both also had security patches 2 days ago, I would be surprised if a fix for this is not amongst them.
  3. If anyone could do it, Ben Heck could. His youtube channel. He was famous for making portable versions of Xbox, SNES, etc, and has recently made a portable Xbox One. --- First, check this PS4 Teardown , to see what tools you'll need and steps to follow. --- If you have a broken PS4, and just want to use the outside case, you could basically gut the entire thing and use a Dremel (rotary tool) to cut out the holes that you need in the back. For the motherboard, look for "thin mini ITX" (example newegg). These "thin" variants usually use laptop SO-DIMMs, or 45-degree angle RAM slots. Hardest part would be finding a good CPU cooler that fits in the profile. You would also be limited to whatever video is built-into your motherboard or CPU - so the 3D performance won't be as good as a PS4. For PSU, you could do an external power "brick" - there are many mini-ITX projects that do this. --- alternatively, if you have a small laptop with a broken screen (or buy from eBay) - you could just take that completely apart, and mount it in the PS4 case - many laptops will run just fine without the battery, and as long as you can get HDMI and USB pointing to the rear, it should work. You'd have to remove any large metal parts inside the plastic PS4 case if you want to use the laptop Wifi/Bluetooth effectively. If you are using wired ethernet, metal shielding won't be an issue. Some laptops might have a "lid closed" detector/switch that would force it to always output to the external display. If you can hard-wire this to the "closed" positiion, it should always go to external display without needing to hit a keyboard shortcut (such as Flag+P). --- GO FOR IT! (if you have a broken PS4 that is not fixable by warranty)

  5. Looks perfect - unfortunately looks to discontinued in USA due to lawsuit from Asetek (press release). NCIX canada only lists the H220-X, which new radiator/reservoir design wouldn't work in my case idea. Know anywhere to get the original H220 still ?
  6. Hi Folks, I'm looking to build a custom PC case, and would like to go the water-cooling route with 2*120mm radiator cooler. What I like about these all-in-ones is that it's completely closed loop, I don't have to worry about refilling or having separate pumps, blocks, reservoirs. For this particular case I'm building, it would be impractical to have separate pump and reservoir due to small space. My question is, if I want to use custom-length tubing, is it possible? How do you refill it without having any air bubbles in the loop? Alternate question: Are there any all-in-one kits that don't come pre-filled, and I could cut (or replace) the tubes to length prior to install? Or perhaps a CPU-block+pump (low profile) part that I can use with other custom water-cooling parts? Thanks in advance!
  7. Sorry to hear about the legal problems. I will build one if I win. I prefer micro-ATX, but would do mini-ITX as well. I own several funnels
  8. Hey Linus, You should ask 4moms to send you one of these robotic self-folding strollers for review : http://www.4moms.com/origami (or their other baby gadgets)
  9. I'm a long-time Mac user (in addition to Windows, Linux, Solaris, Irix, BeOS). I like VMware Fusion better than Parallels. VirtualBox is a solid open-source alternative to either of those. I'd like to see them test BootCamp - just to see if the Windows drivers are there for the 5K display - also so you could benchmark something at 5K. If BootCamp doesn't work, then you can still install Steam - I bet older games like Half-Life 2 will run fine at 5K. Not sure if it'll fit the new iMac, but these are a great idea - http://www.bluelounge.com/products/jimi/ Also, it's worth noting that Apple chose 5K because it's exactly 2x2 the resolution of their previous gen 27" iMac, 27" Cinema Display and 27" Thunderbolt Display. The way Mac OS X handles HiDPI resolutions is to fool older apps into thinking the coordinates are still 2560x1440, but newer apps that are "HiDPI aware" can render at the higher res. I think this is a good compromise, and better than the way Win 7 and 8.1 handle DPI scaling for "retina" style displays (sooo many old Windows apps are broken when you scale 150% or 200%.)
  10. I like the Kuhler 1250, since I've always used air-cooling only, this will convert me.
  11. Yes, I see what you mean, there are several references to this on Google, and no patches that remove the cap. Does your monitor only support DisplayPort from a PC? Or does it also support HDMI 1.4 3D modes through an HDMI port? If so, you could add an HDMI cable, and turn on 3DTVPlay, and choose a mode like 1080p60 3DSBS (side-by-side). This would let the game go up to it's 60fps limit, and you'd be losing 50% of the horizontal resolution, but it might be a worthwhile tradeoff to get stereo 3D support. If your monitor doesn't, perhaps you have an HDTV that has 3D support (and came with glasses) - you could try it on there as well. Note that you'll still have to plug in your 3D-vision emitter, as it will unlock the 3DTVplay feature (or you could pay some $30 unlock license). You won't be able to use your 3D-vision glasses though - just the ones that came with your TV.
  12. Not sure if the version makes a difference, but I have Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, from Steam. Also, my setup is nVidia 3D Vision 1.0, output to Mitsubishi DLP rear projection TV, DVI->HDMI (port 2, labeled as PC), with the 3Dvision emitter "pyramid" getting its sync signal from the TV through a separate cable (it still needs USB for power and driver loading, and to change the green light, etc). Mitsubishi stereo 3D mode is known as "checkerboard", which pre-dates the HDMI 1.4 3D modes. The signal is 1080p60, but the actual number of pixels is 960x1080 like side-by-side, but in a checker board (or chess board) pattern. It's quite smooth and very little cross-talk. It's a shame Mitsubishi stopped selling those TVs. I also bought the separate box to add support for HDMI 1.4 3D modes- this allows PS3 to work in 3D: 720p60 for games and 1080p24 for Blu-Ray 3D movies. (Wipeout 2048 has excellent stereo-3D (and 7.1 audio) if you have a PS3 it's worth getting.) As far as Burnout game config, I didn't have to do anything special. Just launch it then hit the keyboard-shortcut to toggle 3D mode. I tried with a steering wheel controller, but didn't like it - much prefer to use wireless Xbox 360 controller on Windows. Maybe it behaves different with 120Hz LCDs when using 3D vision?
  13. 120Hz is also required for Stereo 3D, such as nVidia 3D Vision. This way you get 60Hz-per-eye. I have first-gen 3D vision on a Mitsubishi DLP, and racing games like Burnout Paradise and 3rd person action like Arkham City/Asylum look great in Stereo-3D.
  14. without vsync turned on, wouldn't tearing still occur at 120Hz ? (tearing is extremely distracting to me) IPS is better for colors and viewing angles, but TN still better for gaming isn't it? (motion blur, etc)
