Sony to spin off Walkman unit

snowComet

After spinning off its flat TV unit, and sold its Vaio computer business last year, Sony announced that they are going to spin off their video and sound business unit, which are famous for their Walkman audio players. The spin-off  will happen in October, and the spun-off department will be a wholly owned subsidiary, juts like Sony's tv business.

Sony also revealed their midterm corporate strategy for the fiscal 2015-2017 period, which will divide their business into three segments. They are:

-“growth drivers” in which aggressive investment will be made

-“stable profit generators” in which the company will seek steady profit
-“area focusing on volatility management” in which the company will seek to curtail risks.

Sony positioned devices, game and network services, picture and music as segments that will drive profits. They will added aggressively invest on those segments to boost both sales and profits, like investing on production capacity and enhance research and development for its image sensors used for smartphones, which have been enjoying robust sales, or focus on efforts to expand customers of PlayStation consoles as well as on the streaming market.

As for their digital camera and video business, Sony said they are not expected a profit (stable profit generators), thus it will not make a large-scale investment, but seek steady profits from the businesses. And for their smartphone and TV businesses,  they will reduce investment (area focusing on volatility management),  and aiming at making them profitable again.

Sony said their targets are consolidated operating profit of more than ¥500 billion for Sony Group, and return-on-equity of more than 10 percent in 2017.

I meant that I don't know anyone that still buys standalone Walkmans or MP3 devices because every phone handles it
