Help building a Download Rig

Hi friends,

I'm planing for download machine which is probably more than 20 hours up a day.

Currently,

I have moderate cabinet and power box which i guess i dont need a upgrade.

I'm not going to attach any keyboard, mouse and Monitor to this machine. (Remote Desktop Only)

and i have 500GB WD HDD. Which is enough for this machine.

So suggest me on MB, CPU, RAM and OS.

and share tips if u have any.

I have experince in building gaming rigs. but not  a downloading machine

and i dont want to waste some extra bucks here so trying to get some suggestion here.

Thanks in advance.

What OS are you even putting on this machine? (I am also going to give you the benefit of the doubt and NOT assume you mean a full-time *illegal* torrenting rig, b/c that's against the CoC)

CPU: i5 4670k • Cooler: Corsair H100i • Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 2x 8GB • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 2x WD Red 3TB • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3GB • PSU: Corsair RM750W • Case: Corsair 750D • Mouse: Razer Naga 2012 (I actually use the thing for productivity/media buttons) • Keyboard: Ducky Shine 3 w/ Browns - Green LED • Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27" 2560 x 1440, ASUS PB238Q 23" 1920x1080 • Lighting: 2m NZXT Sleeved Blue LED Strip • pcpartpicker.com/p/3cHfZ

A dedicated computer for downloading.

No shit einstein. My point is what could you be downloading constantly that you need a dedicated machine for it?

My Rig :  Case: Cooler Master HAF X ,Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H,PSU: Seasonic SS-750KM3,Processor: Core I7 4770k (overclocked 4.7ghz),Cooler: Corsair H100i, GPU: EVGA GTX 780 with acx cooler, RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb DDR3 1600 (overclocked to 2000mhz), HDDS  Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb SSD , Western digital  2tb 7200 rpm 64mb cache, Old 1tb laptop drive I had , 320gb for os backup daily, 80gb external for weekly backups,Drives 2x Lg Blu Ray burner WH16MS40,MISC: Tp-Link dual band wireless card, Logitech g510s, Razer Deathadder 2013, Acer G236HLBbd 23" monitor, Old tv I had 23" for secondary monitor, old 32" samsung tv third monitor

ram just 1 x 2gb or 2 x 2gb depending on how you feel i doubt you would need more than 2gb for a linux downloading machine.

something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/178942-corsair-2gb-ddr3-1333mhz-memory-vs2gb1333d3

I use an atom powered netbook that I got off of ebay that I also use as a HTPC to watch the odd film and download the odd file, useful if you have a poor network connection and files to download as it takes an age.

No, it wouldn't. Torrenting itself is totally fine, just torrenting copyrighted material isn't.

To answer OP though, just grab an Intel Atom SoC board - Gigabyte do one for like £50 I think. Stick some RAM in it, whack on an Ubuntu install and away you go. Can even use Teamviewer as a nice and easy remote-access system if you want it to be headless :)

Its not against CoC to torrent, just to pirate

You really don't need an SSD, ubuntu is such a small OS you dont need one.

Continuing on this topic

How about this?

Biostar NM70I-1037U Combo Motherboard

How about Quality with Biostar?

Just get one of the new Intel Bay-Trails like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-GA-J1900N-D3V-Motherboard-Celeron-Mini-PCI/dp/B00IW99S4A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409966505&sr=8-1&keywords=J1900

Or if you need moar SATA ports, I have a J1900 server board with 7 SATA ports (as well as PCIe and dual ethernet), although they cost 2 or 3 times as much and are a pain in the ass to get hold of. Runs ZFS on Ubuntu just fine though.

Bay-Trail D is basically the new Atom platform on the desktop. CPU only uses like 10W, allowing for completely passive cooling.
