H115i only one pipe gets warm

Hi,

 

Got my H115i for over a year now. In the beginning it was cooling 1800X at 4.0Ghz 1.395V absolutely fine. The chip was topping at 66c

Then I bought 2700X. Managed to get 4.2Ghz no problem and temps were 69C under full load I believe at 1.395V also.

 

Then things started going downhill.

 

Later on while still having 2700X my temperatures increased. I was able to do 4.3Ghz on 2700X without system locking or thermal shutdowns but I can no longer do it. Reseated the cooler many times. (I no longer use 2700X but I'm getting to my point).

 

Few months ago I changed the fans to Noctua 140mm industrial ones and since then when gaming I've been running them at 100%.

 

From then onwards I am getting 60-74c temps when playing The Division at 100% 3000RPM fan speed.

 

2700X wouldn't pass TimeSpy CPU test at 4.3 with this, and the funny thing is that I have my cinebench run for 4.3Ghz saved so I know it worked before.

 

Now I have 9900k. Put it at stock, changed nothing. Looked at some and was like 2070, that's awesome. I didn't look at temperatures though, they were like in high 80s. I seen people use my 280mm AIO or similar and they were getting lower temps while running overclocked to 5.0Ghz! 

 

My chip is binned so I know it runs at 1.28v 5.0Ghz but the cooler is having issues when it shouldn't. Used two different thermal pastes., One of the pipes is getting warm, the other one stays cold. I tried to move it around etc but that did not help. If I want to run this chip on this H115i I have to disable boost in BIOS so it runs at its true stock clocks of 3.6Ghz at auto voltage and I'm still getting high 80's with cinebench scores of 1550.

 

Any idea if I am wrong, if it's the cooler?

 

Corsair support said: "it's fine because it runs at idle" "9900k is bad thermal design. (links debauer video)". 

Then I go on Reddit or YT and see people running 280mm rare just fine while cooling it.

 

No idea what to do, if I sent it back it would be my 2nd RMA of this cooler.

If water in the return line is also warm, it means the radiator is not enough to dissipate the heat, and it might go into thermal runaway

9900K runs hotter than the 2700X for sure

How come other people are running same one and it's fine? My 2700X was eating like 160W OC, this one gets issues at 140W.

Maybe some 9900k are bad units that run hotter than intended

Your AIO is definitely working as expected because your temps with the 2700X is in line

But they are not? I get thermal shutdowns at 2700x with similar wattage. Don't forget, I'm running 3000RPM fans 100% speed all the time.

 

I googled 9900k running hot and I know it does, but I also googled 9900k 280mm AIO and people seem happy with 75-80c at 5Ghz

In your situation you definitely need to be replacing something to resolve the issue

If you are confident your 9900k is within spec, try changing the cooler? Cooler costs less than 9900k

Thermal shutdown at 88+ you mean. I said at same wattage 9900k gets thermal shutdown whereas 2700x doesn't. If I do 4.3ghz on my 2700x it will not work but it used to work. 144w on 2700x = 80c on 9900k = thermal shutdown 

 

I ran 9900k with:

 

Disabled multi core enhancement. Chip was essentially downclocked to 3.6.

88c under load and rising.

 

Used Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut for overclocking too.

I bought H150i 360mm brand new. Well will see if it fixes my issues. At this point it might be the CPU or the cooler.

 

Got AORUS Master Z390 with latest BIOS so it should be fine there. Voltage gets reported correctly etc.

Update: I don't know what I did, but I remounted the CPU, remounted the cooler with blob of thermal paste the side of the globe and CPU temps are now in check!

Guess the cooler wasn't in good contact with the CPU lid

At stock it's around 65c. At 5.0Ghz with 1.3V and LLC at medium it seems happy. 84c max temp after Cinebench.
