Bluetooth 5.0 backwards compatibility

I was considering getting a new pair of Bluetooth earbuds, since my previous ones broke, but my phone has Bluetooth 4.1. Would I still be able to use Bluetooth 5.0 earbuds with it, or is this simply not possible?
