Location: Australia

Budget: $500-$600

Aim: plex server, streaming to 2-4 devices. Will also store backups on here, I backup once a week using Macrium Reflect. Wanting to use Linux, currently have no experience with Linux but learn quick.

Build: will consist of new parts and parts I already have.

New Parts:

CPU: $207.20 AMD Ryzen 5 2400G

M/B: $71.20 ASUS Prime B350M-A

RAM: $122.55 Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB 2400MHz CMK8GX4M2A2400C14

SSD: $87.20Samsung 860 EVO 250GB M.2 (for OS)

Old Parts:

Case: Old Antec Case

PSU: Corsair HX-650

HDD: 6x Toshiba 3TB 3.5"

Main concern is whether it will run 6 sata drives and the M.2 drive at the same time or if the M.2 drive takes up one of the sata.

Probably safer to just go with 16GBs of RAM so you never have to worry about it.

The only boards you should get are the ASrock Pro 4 or MSI Tomahawk(or better) for the VRM heatsinks. Those 2 are usually the cheapest.

Is there no good used cheap server gear in your area?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Prime B350M-A

Watch out to make sure this board can run 2nd gen Ryzen. Some mobos need a BIOS update to run it. I suggest a B450 board.
