Hi all,

"Long time listener, first time caller" as it were here.

Quick Backstory:

Long time PC gamer, Modest budgets, upgrade where I can, use Mac for work as a web developer but still on PC's at home but Got married, had a kid and the PC was in the bedroom. I was not able to use it due to kid sleeping and so on. We recently moved to a bigger place and I have my own office (YAY!)

I played some Battlefield 1 for the first time in ages today and it was good but I know things are pushed and I am keen on Battlefield 5. FPS is my main go to on PC.

Located in Australia.

What I have and what I want to upgrade:

  • I got a decent case and not too fussed as its hidden in my setup (no visible devices, cables etc)
  • PSU is a decent (OTT) affair and more then enough for what I got now let alone an upgrade and a coolermaster water cooling kit and upgraded case fans
  • CPU is a core I5 32nm
  • Asus mobo for the socket so DDR2 memory (32gig)
  • Asus Nvidia 960 basically
  • My Monitor is the acer predator x34 and I know you will say (Yeah, your pushing it there)
  • Already have a newer SSD (Windows 10 install when it was a free upgrade from 7 so I got a new one then which was bigger then what I had)

Primary need a better graphics card but then I thought how old my CPU is now really (Got to be like 6+ years)

So I basically want to play games that will run on the monitor in ultra-wide, look decent and run smoothly. I am not fussed about overclocking etc. Back at Uni I was one of those soft and hard modding graphics cards and CPU's back in the day they just cut lines on the PCB on CPU's and graphics cards when they failed quality tests and sold them as cheaper versions. Even did a bit of vapour changer cooling at one point but these days I can still build a PC - It is just not as fun.

It has been a while being a mac user mainly these days and now I have an office I am thinking upgrade time so what CPU, Memory (I am guessing two 8GB is enough?), motherboard and GPU are going to do me well for a few years and allow me to play Battlefield 5.

Battlefield 5 recomended specs are:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 4790 / AMD Ryzen 3 1300X or equivalent
  • RAM: 12 GB
  • VIDEO CARD: DirectX 11.1 Compatible video card 4GB AMD Radeon RX 480 / 3GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060)

So I am thinking 16GB memory, core I7 and will a 1060 do? My main gripe is (especially in Australia) how expensive graphics cards are these days. 1070's are probably my limit and AU Dollar I think $400 or under would be my limit... $1500 AU all up I am considering as my max. I am not really after cost or prices here though... I just do not know what is a good bundle to go with.

Can Anyone advise please? I know the data I am looking at but I am just out of the loop to what is good. Not looking for OK - I want good, but do not need SUPER AWESOME GO TIME build either. I have baby 2 coming and I know I still wont have as much gaming time as I would like.

THANK YOU ALL. Hoping to get more involved in this community.

Generally I would suggest that you wait since 20-series nvidia cards are coming out in just a little bit but if you have to buy now that's fine.

I thought this but it would be to get things when they get cheaper, but when are they out? And when they out will we see much price drop from 1080's down to 1060's right away?

In terms of a full platform upgrade, the performance you're aiming for looks good on paper, but make sure the full cost of the 4790 + motherboard + ram is less than that of something like ryzen, or else you're just paying the same for less performance. If you were just upgrading the CPU, it would be a different story.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I do have two core questions.

Will just a graphics card see enough gains or vice versa?

And then what brand, type of combo for motherboard and CPU - I got no idea these days.

Open task manager and see what the usage is in the performance section. You can give yourself a good idea of what might be improving. you can also just buy a single component and find out whether or not it gives you enough gain.

The GPU got up to 89% but the CPU stayed solid at 100% the entire time in Battlefield 1.

I am thinking maybe start with new CPU, motherboard and memory and then get new graphics card sometime next year. A 1060 should be a lot cheaper by then?

I do not need most of that as I mentioned, but thanks. I have a better power supply then that already for example.

I found i7 packages for memory, cpu, motherboard and SSD for a lot less then the above and thinking about going with that. Online store packages are good value to get an upgrade at the moment (minus the graphics card)

Alright. Combo deals r worth looking fr. Also, make sure that ur i7 is 8th gen or not, it is locked or unlocked, the frequency of ram that u r getting.
