How to find end of Java String

I am trying to find just the last half of a user inputted string that's an even amount of characters long. So far I can only seem to get the first half and not the last half.

package streckers;

import java.util.Scanner;

public class streckers_LastHalf {


    public static void main(String[] args) {

        Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

first off, user_string.substring() returns a new string, it doesn't modify user_string here so you system out is getting the substring of the original, which is the first half.

This is probably what you were going for

public static void main(String[] args) {
    Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

    System.out.print("Enter a sentence with even amount of characters: ");
    String user_string = sc.nextLine();
    sc.close();
    
    int length = user_string.length();  
    String half = user_string.substring(length/2, length);

    System.out.println(half);
}

to make my first statement more concrete, after you have use substring to get half, your half variable would contain the last half, and your user_string variable would still contain the original unmodified string.

P.S. you should close a scanner when you are done with it.
