bad frames with good hardware

Go to solution Solved by NickPickerWI,

For posterity:

OP figured it out while doing a check of their system. Turns out, the RAM was in slots 3 and 4, not running in dual channel mode.

After putting it into slots 1 and 3, it appears to be working as it should be.

damn that's a good connection (in Aus i'm lucky to get 50 down and 20 up), that rules out my theory (sometimes if the connection isn't great in a game it will fluctuate the FPS quite a lot)

yeah i heard that from my gaming buddies but i didn't think that was the case

do you have a program that i can use to benchmark my pc and get the logs to paste here?

Logs aren't all that important, you could take a screenshot or a picture of the results, or just tell us.

You can use CPUID's HWMonitor to monitor your GPU and CPU temperatures, Unigine's Heaven benchmark for the video card benchmark, and Prime95 for the CPU benchmark. All are free.

Temperatures are important to look at, since your hardware might be throttling due to heat. A bad cooler/misapplied cooler could result in this, as well as bad case airflow. Make sure your fans spin when they're supposed to.

Let us know what this shows.

ive been monitoring my temperatures while playing and it seems theyre around 60-75 while playing, ive seen it max out to 80 sometimes but thats pretty rare

for prime95, what settings should i run the benchmark on?

here's a screenshot just in case you don't know them by heart lmao

I would do Blend for this, and watch your temperatures.

I did see your video card results. It definitely looks like your video card.

I would run this test for Prime95 for like a half hour and see if the CPU overheats/gets unstable. Then I would run the Heaven benchmark again in something less than full screen, and watch the GPU temperature in HWMonitor while you do it to see if the severe dip in frames is accompanied by high heat.

I have never seen a GPU spread that far in Heaven benchmark.

quick question, does msi afterburner monitor gpu temp or cpu temp

max temp on this was 76 fyi

That should be fine for a GPU temp.

Man...something is seriously wrong with that card/drivers. Since you said this has been going on for like 2 years, I don't think it's the drivers.

MSI Afterburner monitors GPU temp. It is an overclocking app for video cards, it doesn't care about the CPU.

gotcha thanks, i started up p95 about 5 minutes ago so i'll keep you updated

currently sitting at 70c

also, what amount of heat should i be looking out for? i believe the frame drops were occurring even during the beginning of the test when my temps were ~40-50

what's next?

I would say the next test is to put in a different video card and see if you have the same kind of framerate fluctuation.

I know you might not have access to another one. But it really seems like you have a defective card, and this would be the easy way to be absolutely sure.

i do have another one but as i said in an earlier post my 1080 barely fits in my case so i'd rather use that as a last resort alternative

what about using the IGPU ?

Ehh, that would be taxing the CPU. The point of using a different video card is to make sure it isn't anything else in the system causing the issues. If you see no issues with a different video card, you have a bad card. If you see the same issues with a different card, it would be something else. Using the iGPU doesn't really do this for you - it could be the slot on the motherboard, for instance.

Hate to say it, but I think you're at your last resort, bud.

if you click on someones name and go to their profile it gives you the option to direct message them (i'm generally on once or twice a day i don't know about others though)
