Computer suddenly stopped working

Go to solution Solved by MAR82,

Final update:

Ok My PC is back up and running! Total down time was 1 day, 11 hours, 40 minutes Not bad for a dead motherboard.

Now that I have installed the same motherboard model 3 times in this case I'm getting really good at it. This time it took me about 40min, and if there's ever a next time I'll be aiming for the sub 30 :P

My friends messaged me and asked me to make this post.  His computer were idling, when it suddenly and randomly shut down. Absolutely nothing happens when he presses the power button.

He was at his couch, close to his computer when it happened. It was a hard power-cut. No system shutdown.

It was just idling what it shut off for no reason.
I have now removed everything from the PC and motherboard except for the CPU and power and I also tested each RAM stick one by one.
Fans will not spin.
The motherboard chipset feels warm but nothing else is happening.
The LED on the power button of the motherboard is lit.
I think it’s the motherboard that died, but I’m not 100% sure. I guess it could also be the CPU or PSU but I don’t think so from what I know about this stuff.
Let me know if you or they need any more information. I would like to go and see about getting the faulty part replaced as soon as I finish work tomorrow.

Is there a click from the PSU when he tries to turn it on?

Sounds like it could be a dead CPU or motherboard.

Dead CPU is unlikely to be the causing the issue, in that case the fans would probably spin at full speed. It could be a dead motherboard though, if the fans are connected to it. I'd say clear CMOS and try again. If that doesn't work, try borrowing a power supply. A psu is a component that is capable of shutting down a PC very fast (and sometimes spectacularly)

Hi everyone, I'm the friend in question and was able to make myself an account here from my work computer.

So I have tested the motherboard with a second power supply and still nothing happens. I don't get a click from the power supplies or anything. The only activity I get is when I power the power supply all the RGB LEDs on the motherboard flash white for a quick second then the on-board power button lights up.

When pressing the on-board power button nothing happens, other than after a bit of time the chipset start to feel a bit warm.

If it were a CPU issue I feel that the fans should start to spin.

I really need to know quickly as the store where I bought the motherboard from no longer sells that model (that I really need for Thunderbolt 3 support) so I need to ask for a refund and buy it from another store today or I'll need to wait about a month before I'll be home long enough to get this sorted out.

Thanks

Quick update:

So I went ahead and ordered a new motherboard from another store that should be delivered by 10am tomorrow. The first store said that they will test the motherboard and give me a coupon for the full amount that I'll be able to use to get my new GPU in about a month (not sure if it will be a GTX or RTX yet).

Right now I'm just crossing my fingers and hopping that I made the right call saying that the motherboard is defective and won't find myself with 2 motherboards since it is an almost 300euro motherboard
