I'm looking to build a multi purpose server to mess around with, I wanna try small web hosting, I wanna have a NAS, and learn about other things people use servers for. Would a Core2Quad or old Xeon (X5670), with 8GB of Ram, and an RX460 2GB be good for server stuff. Also, please feel free give me other server things to try, yes I know this is basically an old gaming rig, and also, yes, this entire post is probably stupid.

Have you tried restarting it?

That's enough hardware to mess around with.

Personally, I would stick to LGA 1366 since parts are a little easier to come by and they're usually pretty cheap.

Be careful with memory, some servers will throw a fit if you use non-ECC memory in them.

I already have that CPU, but the problem is 1366 is one of the harder boards to find, especially at a reasonable price.

Worth poking around some scrapyards:

1366 boards are definitely a bit rarer, but I've found them to be a lot more common than 771/775 boards.

Considering the fact that there are many people using single board computers to serve just about anything you can imagine out there, not to mention providers from who you can rent time on said single board computers, you have more than enough to play around and host just about anything you can think of. Don't forget that a typical low-tier VPS's stats are 1 core w/ 512mb RAM. Your old gaming rig blows that out of the water.

i just don't know the legality of rummaging through the scrapyard.

VPS? I'm too new to server stuff.

As long as they let you buy stuff and you're not stealing it, it's perfectly legal.

Would they let me trade for a pile of cases and a few dead boards?

You'd have to ask them, I wouldn't know.

What exactly are you wanting to do?  You can install Linux onto VMware workstation or something and lab out whatever you want at no cost.

If you want some dedicated hardware even a sbc like a pi or cheap hosted vps are reasonable solutions.

Look around locally for some e-recycling facilities that generally have decommissioned business gear.  I picked up a pretty pristene Dell r610 for $50 recently, you could find some decent stuff on the cheap if you look around your area a bit.

Pretty sure you'll also want, at the very least, some visibly identifiable maggot/insect infestation going on to give you proper leverage during the bargaining phase.

In my professional experience dealing with scrap yard personnel , be it workers or owners, infestation level of decomposer/scavenger critters is often times the determining factor when it comes to how much you'll be able to walk away with after negotiations are finished.

Also the relative "ripeness" of said road-kill, or its natural tendency to stink if it is dead or alive, also plays a major part when it comes to negotiations at scrap yards.

Best of luck!
