HS50 not working properly

My friends is installing his hs50 but the only way we can hear him is when he shouts directly into the headset (not mic), or if he bangs the right earphone. The microphone picks up output sound, so if he's listening to music that's what we're hearing. We've tried both front and back panels, unchecked the "hot mic" box. Does anyone have any similar experiences?

Sounds like a hardware problem. I would recommend a return.
