GPU Ziptie Crashes

Go to solution Solved by BenAgain452,

Yep, it's just Firestrike not working, all else is fine. Thanks to the three of you!

Funny name. huh? Sorry that a help request is my first post here, but I trust you guys know a thing or three.

So a while back I accidentally snapped off a single blade on one of the fans on my GPU. This resulted in my GPU vibrating immensely when the fans reached certain speeds. I thought I could just deal with it. I was wrong. So, I went ahead and zip tied the back of it to the cable routing holes. That solved the vibration issue, but now some games are crashing within minutes of me booting them. No error message or anything. If I was slipping the GPU out of it's slot, shouldn't I be getting bluescreens, or something? I'll toy around with it, and if anyone asks for more details I will try to provide, but any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I would look at getting either a new GPU or a new cooler for your GPU.

When you say you "ziptied the back of it to the cable routing holes", do you mean you ziptied the fan in place?

Here's a good LTT video on replacing GPU fans, apparently it works even better than with the original fans. It might not be the solution to your current problem but I'd at least look at it.

Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen R7 3700X @4.4Ghz, GPU: Gigabyte RX 5700 XT, RAM: 32 GB (2x 8GB Trident Z Royal + 2x 8GB TForce Vulkan Z) @3000Mhz, Motherboard: ASRock B550m Steel Legend, Storage: 1x WD Black 1Tb NVMe (boot) + 1x Samsung 860 QVO 1Tb SSD (storage), Case: Thermaltake Core V21, Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

So here's what I did. The zipties clear the fan; it can spin freely. That rear fan is the one missing the blade. I'd rather not buy a whole new GPU, at least until the 11/20 series launches. Any chance I could send it in to ASUS for repair? Warrenty's probably long gone, and this damage is not the product's fault, anyway, but would they repair it for cheaper than me replacing it? I'm about to go to bed for the night, but maybe tomorrow I can see if cutting the ziptie off fixes it? I also have a 'spare' 1070 (friend is saving for a build but GPU was on super sale so he got it early and left it in my hands) I could also test with.

Ok, so, this is a little embarrassing. The two things that were giving me trouble were Watch_Dogs 2 and 3DMark. I had run both shortly before the whole ziptie thing, and they worked fine then. But now, I was able to fix Watch_Dogs 2 by simply doing a Verify Integrity in Steam. I did the same to 3DMark. That didn't fix it, but it's only Firestrike acting up. Though it had worked before the ziptie, it's the only test that seems to have borked; Sky Diver and TimeSpy Extreme still work. And Firestrike has always been temperamental for me. So when I wake up tomorrow I'll try some other games and programs, but it seems like case probably closed.

But hey, the zipties 99% stopped the vibrations!
