Fan Splitters

Silverdogz

Looking at changing out my case fans for some new Corsairs.

CPU would be using the 4 pin PWM header on the board with a Corsair ML120 Pro. While the front puller fan would be a 3 pin using the SYS_FAN1 header which is 3 pin, which would be using a Corsair AF120.

Those are fine, my question is can I use a splitter on the SYS_FAN2 header to run a 120mm AF120 and a 140mm AF140. They have different maximum RPMs with the AF140 topping out at 1200 RPM, while  the AF120 tops out at 1500 RPM. The amperage for the fans are .23A and .40A respectively. Can I just use a fan splitter for 3 pin fans off of the header?

Thanks.

The limit is generally 1amp@12v for standard 3-pin fan headers. Some boards support more.

The differences in RPM will be noticeable and will possibly make the RPM reading in bios wrong. It may take a little tuning to get your fan profiles working correctly.

If you don't plan on modifying fan curves or want one of the fans to run at a static speed, you'd be better off running one directly off the 12V power rail from the PSU, though that can start to look a bit messy, especially if you need to add a new cable to your PSU for it.

I'd rather run the 140mm off of Molex as I already have molex fans in the case. I guess that's what'll do as the 140mm should be quieter at full tilt than the other ones. I'll just turn up my speakers.

Yes, you can run different fans off of a splitter with no issue.
