Hey everyone!!  so I just bought a 2017 MacBook Pro with touch bar.

Specs:

3.1ghz I7 quad core

16gb ram

560 gpu

1tb ssd

and the new MacBook Pro 6 core was just released, I still have a couple days to return the 2017 model and get the new 6 core one.  But what im having a hard time with is in order to get it, I need to get the 512gb instead of the 1tb because Best Buy does not have it.  Is it better to have the I7 quad core at 3.1Ghz with a 1Tb SSD, or would it be better to get the new one with 2.6ghz 6 core with the 512gb SSD. I have external drives for more storage since ill be taking a hit in SSD size, but for longevity and speed is it better to get the 2.6ghz  6 core with 512gb ssd or stay with the 3.1ghz 4 core and the 1tb ssd?

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Thanks!!

Do you need the extra 500GB of very fast storage?

  • Yes? Then obviously keep what you have.
  • No? Then obviously get the new one....

Why don't you return the MacBook Pro at Best Buy and order the new version directly through Apple? You can configure to your needs.

If money is a factor, then you need to decide how much space you really need onboard, and whether or not USB-C storage is fast enough for the rest, because the Macs can't be upgraded...

djdowsk97, well I believe 512gb will be enough for my editing needs. I just liked the 1tb cause then I wouldn't necessarily need to use my Samsung t5 SSD. but all the photos and videos I edit are well under 512gb so it would be enough space. I was just wondering if the lower clock speed but 2 more cores of the new MacBook is worth it to give up the ssd space. is a 2.6ghz 6 core vs a 3.1ghz 4 core that much faster?  even though its slower clock speed does the 2 cores make up a lot of improvement?

The clockspeed is irrelevant, the 6 core will be much faster (assuming it doesn't throttle like crazy and even if it throttles pretty badly it should still be noticeably more powerful).

Fullmental price doesn't matter. my current MacBook was $3400 the 6 core 512gb would be only $2800 so I would save $600. I was just wondering if giving up the 512gb of ssd space is worth 2 extra cores even though its a lower clock speed. like for video and photo editing, is the 6 core at a lower speed better than a 4 core at a higher speed?  and the reason I can't get the new 1tb is because Best Buy legit doesn't have them. they only have the 256gb and the 512gb of the MacBook Pro that was just released. im using my card there which gives me 12 months financing so thats why I have to choose between the 6 core or keep the 4 core with bigger ssd.

djdwosk97. so just to make sure, if I only need 512gb ssd or less and can use my external Samsung t5, it will be more beneficial to return the 3.1ghz 4 core 1tb and get the 2.6ghz 6 core 512gb instead?  this macobok pro is specifically for photo and video editing. will the 2 extra cores be better in the long run rather than having an extra 500gb of internal ssd space?

And btw thank you for the replies!!  I plan on keeping this MacBook Pro for a long time and I just want to make sure I get the best one for long term photo and video editing. Even if that means having 512gb vs 1tb. I just want it to be the best at editing photos and videos for as long as possible. And any finished products I can send to the Samsung T5 so I don’t get the MacBook ssd full

500gb should be more than sufficient since you can very easily add more via USB (or TB3 if you really need the speed, which you more than likely don't).

TimsTips, thank you very much!  Much appreciated on the info. I figured as much but just wanted to make sure the 2.6ghz 6 Core 512gb ssd was a better choice for long term vs the 3.1ghz 4 core 1tb ssd. And again this is strictly for photo and video editing.

TimTips that is great to know!!  very awesome. just since this is for video and photo editing first and foremost I thought the 2 extra cores would be best. ill be using it for internet also and messages but I am buying this mainly for photo and video editing. and ya 20% does seem good. just wanted to make sure I wasn't gonna screw myself but I guess if they dropped the clock speed and added 2 cores there must be a good reason lol. Thanks again guys!

I guess what I'm asking is why do you need to get the Macbook from Best Buy specifically? You can return it and just get your money back. Then you can buy from somewhere that has the configuration you want in stock.

Yes @TimTips its the Best Buy card so the 12 month financing is why I need to buy it there and they do not even stock the 1tb thats why im making sure the higher core count with lower clock speed is worth losing a little ssd space.  but since its for photo and video editing I think im going to return it and get the 6 core. I just want this to last as long as possible and I have an external Samsung T5 so that will be fine to miss out on a little internal ssd space as long as the 2 extra cores will be better for photo/video editing

I am guessing that he has a Best Buy credit card.

ya I have that so thats why. does photo and video editing benefit from the 2 extra cores or is it mainly video editing that benefits?  cause ive read some spots where people say higher clock speed is better than more cores but then ive heard the opposite also. seems apple would add more cores but less clock speed for a reason ya know?  why do they do lower clock but more cores?
