hi guys,

 

First off I would like to say thanks to LTT for numerous videos you have put out- very informative.

 

I am building a new HTPC to replace my old 1080P HTPC. I use a 65inch 4k monitor (not tv) for my display.

 

However, I can find nothing about 4k support and where it begins with intel cpu's.

 

For example, netflix and amazon both have requirements, as does 4k ultra disc. 

 

Could you please chime in on this for me, and perhaps clear things up as to what the requirements really are.

Amazon: no clue

Netflix: requires 7th gen intel cpu or higher, or a gtx 10-series GPU

UHD Blu-ray: Requires 7th gen intel cpu or higher, though you can get disks to work through other methods. Google (and the makeMKV forums) are your friend with that last part.

well I have a SUPERMICRO SuperO MBD-C7Z170-OCE-O LGA 1151 mother board, i am trying to decide what cpu to use- was thinking 7700k, but I have been out of the loop for some time.

 

btw is that either or both as a requirement?

 

oh...so my gtx 970 wont cut it?

 

any advice?

7700k should work. either works for 4k netflix. One more thing I forgot to mention is an HDCP 2.2 compliant monitor.

There may also be some requirements that I don't know of/forgot (There might be something about not being able to have multiple monitors), so I encourage you to check for the system requirements on your own.

as far as I can tell this is a hardware issue, not so much as a display issue, but I dont really know. As I am using monitors and not a TV.

Unfortunately no. I'm not sure whether netflix requires the playback monitor to be on the iGPU if you don't have a 10-series card...

What monitors do you have?

well I have a 43 inch acer for my pc and a 65 inch phillips for my HT set up- both are native 4k

ok well lthe pc monitor is an acer et430k, i cant get to the back of the phillips right now- its a fixed wall mount

It says HDCP 2.2 is supported on your Acer.

Sorry for the late reply but you are indeed correct, 4k works in both HDMI and Display Port- via Netflix. However, I have to use the onboard intel graphics so that Netflix will play in 4k, so what I did was to plug the HDMI in to the onboard video and the DP into my card- and tada works great all I have to do I simply switch between monitor modes.
