Old Macbook, many issues...

So a while ago I purchased a 2008 15" MacBook Pro A1260 from eBay in untested condition for €30. I installed RAM, but not a battery. When I plug it in, at first it powered on, but had no chime and no video. I kept messing around with it for a while, trying various tricks and tips from various forums, but to no avail. I tried again this morning, but now it turns on and instantly powers off. I have no previous experience with Macs of any sort, except for an old iMac G5 that runs Debian Linux

I would love a bit of help, because I need a non-hackintosh computer to run OSX and its softwares, because of the programs I need to use.

Hopefully someone can help me before I have to fork over cash to the Dundrum Compu-B store (Compu-B because they are Ireland's main apple outlet).
