A couple days ago, I let my PC "Update and Shut Down" to install the new update that I can't opt out on. The next day, when I tried to turn on my computer, I got a message saying "Bootmgr image is corrupted. System cannot boot". I've searched online and tried pretty much everything. Here's a list

  • Used a Windows Installation disk and tried all repair options (Startup Repair, System Image Restore, Go Back to Previous Build, etc). Also tried resetting computer, but only got error message that it cannot be done
  • Used Command Prompt in said installation disk and tried all the bootrec.exe and bootsect options.
  • Cleaned RAM and tested if CMOS battery was working

None of these solutions worked. I would prefer to not do a complete reset, as I have important files on the computer. If anyone has any other solutions, or a way to back up my data, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If none of the CMD commands work then I think you've only got one option and that is to do a clean install of Windows.

You may need to do a fresh clean installation of Windows. You can boot off of Linux or something on a USB drive and copy all of your important files from your PC to an external drive, then reinstall Windows.

PC:

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X | AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE | 32 GB RAM | Arch Linux

Laptop:

MacBook Pro 13" (2019) | Intel Core i5 8279U | 8 GB RAM | macOS

Server:

Intel Core i7 6700K | 16 GB RAM | 2 TB HDD | Debian Linux
