Slow Network Speeds

Hello, 

        I have a home network that consists of 2 Cisco E1200's, a few connected home adapters from direct TV that allow my 1980's house to have ethernet via the otherwise unused coax cabling, and a 3com network switch that I bought for $15 at a yard sale. Now, in my basement where a friend and I are starting a company we would like to have all of our devices connected to a switch (the 3com one) but when I plug in the switch from either the connected home adapter or another router I only get 5mbps yet when I'm connected directly to the router (which's input comes from the connected home switch) I get what I should be getting (25mbps up and 5 Mbps down). I thought originally that this could be an issue with the switch but I plugged in a Linksys SE1500 and got the exact same results with both methods, directly into the wall and through the router). Does anyone have any idea of why this could be happening? It's starting to annoy me having to daisy-chain routers to routers just to add more ethernet connections. Thanks in advance!

Not really knowing your network layout it sounds like you're running a network signal over coax to your switch from your router. I would directly plug in the switch to the router with a network cable like a standard Ethernet cable or have a technician route one to your basement.
