How to reuse an old radiator for your GPU

AskTJ

I had an old 240mm radiator lying around, and my brother took it as he had a use for it.

He has an Asus Strix Dual 1070, and he was using the stock cooler with dual fans. It idles at around 30-40c, and starts revving up very high and reaching around 60 degress.

A good temperature, but the fans worked hard, around 1500 RPM or more to keep it under that threshold.

He decided he wanted a better solution, so he took my 240mm radiator that I wasn't using (without my permission), and used it.

He bought a mounting kit from NZXT for around $40 unopened, that has one fan, and a radiator mount. He put the radiator onto the graphics chip, and the fan blowing onto the VRM's and other components.

Now he never reaches over 45c on load, and he idles at around 18-30c.

A good way to use an old radiator.

hi.

Thats cool that he was able to repurpose it like that, even if it was against your knowledge with your hardware. However, this has been a very long known mod in the community so its nothing ground breaking.

Thanks for the comment. He did tell me about the radiator and I let him use it, so no hard feelings there.
