It depends if it's upgrading to a newer build or not - which it probably is, if it's been out for more than a few months, since those are released every 6 months or so.

 

All the OEM crapware that most pc's ship with slow down the upgrade process a lot. 4 hours is still a very long time though, does the machine have only hard drives or does it have an SSD? If it has an SSD 4 hours is definitely unusual.

In that case, it is a longer time than I would expect, but it's not unheard of for a standard hard drive - it really depends just how much oem crapware was on there before the upgrade started. 

 

So long as the machine still looks active - hdd light blinking etc - i wouldn't worry for now. It's just a shame you've had to basically wait 4+ hours with your new machine before being able to use it.

 

In case it's ever an issue in future - if you restore it to factory or anything - it's worth removing all of the software you don't need from the machine before performing Windows Updates. That'll ensure they take the least amount of time, as there will be less to migrate between builds. Heavy-handed antivirus software like Norton or MacAfee are especially bad.
