Hi, I will be soon overclocking my i5 7600k, I want to aim for 5ghz and I'm just wondering how much I should expect my temps to increase? Under a usual full load my cpu sits maximum at 55 and averages around 50. What do you guys think a 5ghz overclock will bring it up to? Say best case scenario where my voltage is lower than usual and worst case?

It's really difficult to say with any accuracy, since we don't know what voltage your specific chip will need in order to reach those speeds.

 

But, to help a little, here's some basic rules: temperature - and power consumption - increase linearly with clock speed, and exponentially with voltage.

 

If you were somehow able to run 5GHz all-core with your current cpu voltage, you'd be gaining 800mhz on top of your 4.2 max boost (or 1200 on top of 3.8 base). That's an increase of between 19.04% to 31.57% to power consumption and heat. That'll bring your temps to between 56-61 and 65-71. Since for every 10C additional temperature, cpu leakage increases by approximately 4%, you can add an extra 1-2C to those figures.

 

As soon as you increase voltages, the percentage increase in temperature becomes exponential. 

 

The above calculations assume you have a cooling system with a linear gradient (ie, you aren't using an undersized cooler) and that thermal transfer is optimal. That also means that delidding is assumed since the internal TIM is going to transfer heat less effectively both over time, and as heat increases. 

 

You'll be unlikely to overclock to 5ghz on air or a small closed loop without a delid, for example. The heat will just build exponentially as soon as the bounds of the internal TIM and the cooler are reached; at which point leakage will also grow.

 

tl;dr - we have absolutely no idea how to calculate this for you. There are way too many variables. If you have a large AIO or a huge air cooler, and you have delidded, and you have a good chip, you can expect 5ghz to run between 70 and 80C under full cpu load. If you don't delid, you may be unable to reach it before hitting 90+.

With a liquid cooler you should probably be good :) Remember though that a 5ghz overclock is never guaranteed!

Every CPU behaves different and so do their temps. I think you would still be hitting high temps and I recommend just taking it in small steps on both voltage and frequency.

delidded or not? 5ghz is fairly hard pushed for Kaby Lake, so it's likely you will get temps in the 80s even after delidding because you have to push a boardline-dangerous amount of volts to it.

Unfortunately no delid! So the general opinion is so far, probably not, probably and no xD

 

I see the average volts for a 5ghz OC on an i5 7600k is 1.28? I thought that wasnt dangerous?

Actually Kaby Lakes are known to overclock to 5.0GHz, or at least get pretty close, like 4.8 - 4.9GHz.

 

All this 5.0GHz needing a delid, AIO... I don't buy it, why? Because my 8700K reaches 5.0GHz on a mid range Hyper 212 HSF, and that is a 6C/12T CPU, far more power hungry than a 4C/4T CPU like the 7600K.

 

If you fail to hit 5.0GHz, it won't be due to thermals as long as you have a decent HSF and don't use very high voltages (over 1.4V)

It will most likely come down to silicon quality, as not all 7600Ks will hit 5.0GHz with stability, it's a bit of a (silicon) lottery. But you should definitely be able to get at least 4.8GHz with decent cooling.

What's the max temp on your 8700k at 5ghz??

For AVX software, mid 80s but that is actually at 4.9GHz as I use an AVX offset.

 

For non AVX software at 5GHz, high 70s to low 80s when stress testing using Intel XTU.

 

For gaming, temps stay under 70, it's not as intensive on the CPU.
