Have you checked to see if your power plans are set up properly? On portable devices there's different settings for when the device is plugged in versus on battery power. Obviously it's normally set up the other way around, but it could have been changed.

 

Worth checking, at least.

I went into power plans but there was no option on how to change the actual performance. There's just settings changing screen brightness, what happens when you close the lid etc. It says i'm on a plan that balances the hardware's performance in relation to energy consumption. Is there any more detailed way to change the settings?

Yes, click "change plan settings", then "change advanced power settings" in the next screen. You have to be in the old control panel for this, there's a link to it at the side of the new one.

It only gives me access to a balanced power plan and in advanced settings I can only change the display, sleep, desktop background settings and power buttons
