I've been doing some digging around in the forums, I am interested in buying some Phanteks Halos for my Noctua NF-12s in my build.  Since my PC is a few years old with a Z97 board,  before the RGB craze it does not have any RGB sync that's common place today.

My question is can the halos power/color config be controlled using an SMD5050 USB controller like this one below;

https://www.amazon.com/Lemonbest-120leds-Flexible-Changing-Waterproof/dp/B015R44RZC/ref=sr_1_5?s=lamps-light&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1523324307&sr=1-5&keywords=rgb+usb&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_72%3A1248909011

I saw in a previous thread on the forums someone mentioned using a SMD5050 controller, but I would prefer to power it internally either via USB using my NZXT USB hub, or worst case scenario molex connector.

Thanks!

They use the standard 4 pin 12V RGB standard so it will not function a 5V USB controller but will on a regular RGB one such as this:

I have two of those for my desk, I wanted to see if I can get away with having something internal that will turn off and on with the system.  Another option would be to get a molex connector and solder it?

That being said, did you notice the controller I linked says 12-24V?

Could I also potentially get a molex to 12v barrel connector for the controller you posted?

I really just want it to turn on and off with system power versus using a remote like I do with my desk.

You can get a molex to barrel adapter for the controller to power it is the PSU.

The output of the USB one will still only be 5V and isn’t suitable for the Halo units.
