Hello LTT Community,

First of all I would like to apologize, I have no knowledge when it comes to home servers... On that note I have a spare PC (after an upgrade) I would like to build into a home server. Would the following parts work? If it does feel free to add any parts I should add. Also May I get some info if this would be a good idea and why? What I was planning is basic file sharing for my work team and family.

Parts:

Case: Thermaltake Core v21

Mobo: MSI Z97M-43

CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K

Memory: 16gb 1600mhz

PSU: 500w PSU (can't remember make and model...)

Yeah, that's fine.

What kind of storage configuration did you have in mind?

I honestly have no Idea, I wanted to get as much advice first then add.

How much storage do you need, and do you require any kind of redundancy?

My server (specs in Sig) started out as a $200 POS i got off Craigslist.  It has evolved over time to what it is now as my needs changed, and as i learned new things about what could be done.

that should work fine, what you have there.  I have a beefy CPU because its a plex server, and trans-coding on plex is very CPU dependent.  4 lossless Blu-Ray trans-codes at a time maxes out my 1700.  thats the max load we will ever have, so its perfect.

The next thing I will be doing is putting my 1070 in it and exploring whether i can use it as a remote game farm, and have a thin client on my desk i use in-home streaming to game with.

Id start with what you need, build from there.

Linux Daily Driver:

CPU: R5 2400G

Motherboard: MSI B350M Mortar

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4

HDD: 1TB POS HDD from an old Dell

SSD: 256GB WD Black NVMe M.2

Case: Phanteks Mini XL DS

PSU: 1200W Corsair HX1200

Gaming Rig:

CPU: i7 6700K @ 4.4GHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270-N Wi-Fi ITX

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4

GPU: Asus Turbo GTX 1070 @ 2GHz

HDD: 3TB Toshiba something or other

SSD: 512GB WD Black NVMe M.2

Case: Shared with Daily - Phanteks Mini XL DS

PSU: Shared with Daily - 1200W Corsair HX1200

Server

CPU: Ryzen7 1700

Motherboard: MSI X370 SLI Plus

RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4

GPU: Nvidia GT 710

HDD: 1X 10TB Seagate ironwolf NAS Drive.  4X 3TB WD Red NAS Drive.

SSD: Adata 128GB

Case: NZXT Source 210 (white)

PSU: EVGA 650 G2 80Plus Gold

Hello!

Thank you for your input!

Any Ideas how much storage would be suffecient? There might be about 4-12 users for file sharing...

I would go with double what you need as a general rule.  untill you start getting into the multiple Terabytes like I have done.

So, if you know you need 500GB.  get 1TB.

Personally i have Windows Storage Spaces to setup a software RAID 5 array out of my 3TB drives for redundancy, you dont have to do that.  but definitely get a backup solution going.
