Hey guys!

I'm new to this forum, and also all the PC tech and everything.

I'm thinking of buying a brand new PC with the following specs:

Processor:  Intel Core i5 8400

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080

RAM: 8GB DDR4

Motherboard: Z370

Storage: 120GB SSD/1TB HDD

Case: K380 cooler master

DVD Writer: Surfer Drive

Monitor: 22" LED HP N220

Power supply: 700W

Cooling: 120mm fans (2 pieces)

Is this a good buy for around $1600 USD? Is anything bottlenecking? I know that my monitor is only 1080p and I won't be able to make full use of the GTX 1080 with it, but I really want a future proof build and I might replace the monitor in about 3 years for a 4k one anyways. Any tips?

PS: I don't plan on over clocking as I'm fairly new to the gaming PC bus.

I would still get the 8600k, because otherwise you are wasting money on the z370 mobo

i agree, you are paying for a overclock chipset even tho you might not overclock it now atleast later on down the road when the 8600k isnt top of the line you can get a little more performance from it.

main system build --> i7-7700K (at 5.0 ghz), MSI Z270 SLI Motherboard, corsair vengeance lpx 8gb ddr4 2666mhz,  costume liquid cooling loop with 360 mm radiator on CPU, GTX 1080 gigabyte windforce OC, 1TB WD drive, 128 gb samsung nvme m.2, EVGA 850 watt semi modular power supply, CM storm stryker case (ya not ideal for costume loop), VIOTEK GN34C 34 inch curved monitor <----

Spoiler

I have a 1080, it will only run around 70% of my games at 4k (at playable frame rates with decent/high settings) so I wouldn't jump on that bandwagon.

If i was to change anything in that build with your aim of a 3 year like I would look at swapping the CPU to an i7 8700k - you may not want to overclock now, but that can change fast, and it's better to have the option now with a faster CPU and not use it than to be stuck with a slower CPU that needs replacing later. This is just my personal opinion.

You will also want to add another 8gb of ram when you have the funds and lastly whilst 120gb is ok, it will fill fast as even an OS drive. I do feel for $1600 you could build a better rig provided you can get the 1080

You need to clarify on playable FPS, its very subjective. Many dont want anything below 60 - so not the average, but the minimum.

That's the thing: the 1080 costs around $800 where I live and the i5 8400 costs me only $250, whereas an i7 8700k costs $400, which puts a significant dent on my budget. I could upgrade my processor, but that means I have to downgrade my GPU. Should I go for that? If I could reduce costs on some other components, please let me know.

8400 + 1080 is the better deal.

A quick build here, more/faster ram, better monitor (1080P and 1ms response), larger/better SSD, Probably a better PSU, and a better processor

Seems pretty sweet! But I live in Pakistan, and they sell almost everything at a much higher price here since it gets imported. The specs you sent me would cost me around $2000 although its only $1640 in your area.

It definitely is better, but I have to keep within my budget. If I keep both of those components, I'll need to downgrade SOMETHING. Thanks for all of your quick responses, this is a pretty sweet community :)

Why not Ryzen? Could get you the savings you need.

With medium/high settings, 1080 is more than capable of this at 4K. I wish more people realized that, not everything needs to be maxed out.

Right I have a 1080 Palit Gamerock Premium (one of the fastest out of the box 1080's) on water, I know and experience what it can deliver, not what I have watched on YouTube/reviews, I never said maxed out settings nor did I say not in any/all my games. Maybe you should read what I wrote before trying to incorrectly correct me (not trying to be a d*!k here, just get a lot of people trying to push opinions out based on what they've seen/read - SLI been the usual example, last one was the 970 3.5gb ram where apparently the slow down was massively widespread... oh and all iphones bent in peoples pockets ....)

As I said 70% of "my" games (not all games) and will run 60 FPS with decent/high settings not "max or ultra".  However some are hogs, for instance Final Fantasy 15 on 4k with Gameworks disabled with high texture and medium LOD gets me around 40 FPS - keep in mind my 1080 is pegged at 2100mhz due to water and factory clocks. Watch Dogs 2 struggles with 50 FPS at 1440P. Yes these are two games that aren't incredibly well optimised, however keep in mind that the 1080 is approaching 2 years old and games are only going to get more and more demanding, hence my statement with reference to 4k gaming

trust me when I say, the 1080 is a great 1440P card, however we aren't really at the point of a single card solution to 4k gaming in all games, we just don't have the grunt yet, even the 1080ti cant manage 4k in Final Fantasy 15 - yes it's one game, but games are going to get more demanding, by the time most GPU's are comfortable with 4k gaming, 8k will be here I seen the exact same thing with 1080P, once 1080P was fully mainstream and we managed single GPU solutions that could maintain high FPS we saw 4k introduced.

ah ok, that wasn't stated in the OP - well if that's the best you can get in your budget it isn't a terrible build by all means, I would be wary of that PSU though. The 8400 isn't a bad CPU neither, just for your future aim (as others also said) you may be better with a 8600k

Okay then! Thanks everyone, I gather that I should try getting a processor that supports over clocking such as the i5 8600k. It is a little bit beyond my budget, but I will try to expand it a little.

I will also add another 8 gigs of DDR4 RAM to my system after some time, and if needed buy some more SSD storage.

Thanks everyone for all your support!

Sure man! It is more than enough for your system. And the vs-series are good psus.
