GPU Prices starting to settle?

Hey everyone. 

 

So I've noticed that GPUs in a few spaces are finally starting to drop in price pretty significantly. Mainly the used market and manufacturers so far. EVGA actually has some in stock and for lower than before prices(still far over msrp, but better than they've been) and Ebay prices are at around $600 for used 1080s. Neweggs prices and availability have improved as well. I'm hoping this will continue and everyone who's looking to pick one up will be able to do so soon, and at a reasonable price. :) I would still advise holding out for a little longer for pieces to drop more but things are looking better. The longer we hold out on the used market, the better prices should become! 

 

I was also just wondering what everyone else thinks of this?  Is this just part of the cycle, mining purchases plateauing and inventory finally building up? Or are things like the speculations of new Nvidia cards(both GeForce and mining specific) and proof of stake playing a role? Do you think GPUs will continue to get closer to their intended original prices?

I mean, I've always been in the camp of things only being worth half of the intended MSRP once used, in any of my hobbies (despite what going rates are) so I wouldn't buy or sell for much out of that range no matter what. For example, I have a r9 390 collecting dust that I don't plan on selling until the going rate for a used one nears the $150 mark. Call it stupid or selfish, that's just what I go by. Scored some very cool deals that way before, and that's just what I think should be circulated. As for cards used for mining, I also wouldn't pay much over half the MSRP value just on the fact that the memory chips have sustained that kind of prolonged usage (despite the GPU die and VRM temp/stress levels being kept in check or not).

I expect AMD cards to stay at higher prices for longer than Nvidia, they've been hard to get for such a long time. 1080s new a few weeks ago were in the $900+ range, I'm just hoping the downward trend continues and we finally get reasonable prices.

Found a Gtx 1070ti for 560usd(5600Skr) in stock at a obscure retailer here in sweden... so hopefully

so if the 1080 stays on the same price level I should probably get one of these over waiting ages for a 1070 to go back to a normal price, I guess?

Everytime bitcoin drops inventory is easier to find. Unfortunately msrps have raised due to memory shortages so don't expect them to ever settle back down to pre mining craze prices. As soon as bitcoin goes back up the inventory will be gone as well

Fanboys are the worst thing to happen to the tech community World. Chief among them are Apple fanboys.

Bitcoin isn't mined with GPU's anymore.

Right, but just about every crypto fluctuates along with bitcoin, and the number one miner, nicehash pays in bitcoin.

No wrong. GPUs are used for mining alt coins resistant to ASICs. Like Etheruem and Zcash. Nicehash does pay in bitcoin but that has nothing to do with the shortage

I didn't clarify what I meant well enough, for the most part every alt coin fluctuates the same as bitcoin does, with a few minor exceptions. So when the price of bitcoin falls, people stop buying gpus because they are afraid the market just popped which then opens up availability for gamers. 

Fanboys are the worst thing to happen to the tech community World. Chief among them are Apple fanboys.
