Just moved into an apartment complex with very thin walls.

This gives me two challenges, with my new build.

1) I need the pc to be on the smaller side (depth at 40cm or below.)

2) I need the pc to be very quiet (below 25 dB)

The place i plan on placing it, limits the depth to 40 cm. It can almost be as wide and tall as needed.

I measured the background noise in my apartment at night, and it hangs around 25 dB. So a noise level under that while gaming would be ideal.

Im planning on using this method to pick parts.

Its a bit frustrating that he doesnt show thermals or benchmarks or anything like that, but is this method of having only the case fans(and gpu) really viable?

I dont have a hard price limit. But im looking to use around 1000 USD excluding GPU. I already have a 1070 im planning on using for this build.

Im planning on buying the 2gen ryzen chips, with a TDP of 65 w. So something like a 2600 or 2700 non x.

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15

I know hes using a be quiet! one in the build, but i like noctua better.

But im sure its fine right?

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv mATX

I should probably get one with sound dampening, if i want it to be that quiet. But it's nice to have nice design aswell. :)

But should this micro atx case provide enough airflow to have only case fans?

It would be cool to do something like this, but it probably doesnt have good enough air flow to stay quiet?

Should be possible, but if you live in an apartment where your neighbors will complain about a running computer I think you need to talk to your neighbors LOL.

CPU: AMD 3800X GPU: GTX 1080 Ti RAM: (16GB) 2x Corsair 8gb DDR4 3200Mhz Drives: SanDisk 240GB SSD, Samsung 500GB SSD, WD 1TB HDD

Well it is mostly for myself. Living in a small space, noises get irritating rather quickly. But im sure some of my neighbours can hear my current rig at night, as it reaches nearly 40 db. So why not help them out :)

Noctua or be quiet is of no importance. They are both not the best for silent builds. Take a look at the Thermalright HR-02 or Scythe Ninja 4 (or the new 5) both outperform the best Noctua at low noise configuration. He used only be!quiet parts for all because they have paided. The SilentWings3 or StraightPower 11 can still be a useful for you.

The GPU is the next problem. Something like the Arctiv Xtrem IV or Arctic S3 is a 4 slot design and the other silent oem gpu cooler are likely to be 3 slot.

Thanks ill check them out. I actually thought noctua was the best low noise cooler.

It is unclear if the 400mm depth limit takes into account the 50mm - 100mm rear clearance needed for cabling and cooling. I would suggest simply turning the case sideways as most are nowhere near 400mm wide. Some sort of panel would help hide cabling.

The i7-8700 is a 65W TDP part.

You might consider a Kraken X62 rev B cpu cooler. While significantly more expensive than an NH-D15, it can run a little quieter. The added cost is partially offset by not having to use more expensive low profile memory modules. Case airflow is also improved by the addition of two fans.

Consider a case designed for quiet operation.

An over capacity psu should run without the fan spinning or at low rpm most of the time.

Thanks for your input. Really appreciate it.

I cant turn it sideways, since its a window. Would block the whole thing :P There is space for the cables and such, even with a 40 cm case,

I didnt mention it, but im doing some light video editing. Thats why i want a Ryzen.

My plan is to strip the fans off the NH-D15 and only have case fans, as seen in the video. It makes it that much quieter. And AIO water cooling has the pump.

The PSU seems really good. I might save a few bucks that way. rather than a fully passive one.

It's a myth that Ryzen is necessarily better for video editing. Check out the data in https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2017-1-2-CPU-Performance-Core-i7-8700K-i5-8600K-i3-8350K-1047/
