Speaker and DAC setup help

Hi after watching tek of tomorrows latest video about DAC`s and such I realised I should sort my audio life out also! Im looking at getting an external DAC as said for around the £100 mark so about $150. I would also like to get a good set of speakers for this to plug into! The problem lies in I have no idea which DAC or speakers to get! I have heard many good things about these speakers: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/32248964/698684436/-/ListingDetails.html?_%24ja=tsid:13315%7Ccat:32248964%7Cprd:32248964&$$ja=cgid:7111953537|tsid:48121|cid:130773177|lid:54119181177|nw:g|crid:22715958777|rnd:12895489741753124602|dvc:c|adp:1o1|mt:

But i know they use a 4mm banana plug, will these fit into a DAC? I am the ultimate noob at this stuff and wonderring if you guys can help me out? Thanks in advance :)

Those speakers are passive, so you actually need an amp. Search Lepai on Amazon and there should be a stereo amp for twenty pounds. It should be all you need.

A DAC is not required if you're using your computer, but if you really think your onboard sound is bad, you can get a DAC for around thirty pounds. Behringer UCA202 and FiiO D3 are good options.

Okay thanks so would this be a good set of speakers to go for or is there better? And could I not just plug it into a DAC and not the amp as id really like to have a DAC but is an amp necessary? Thanks :)

You literally will not be able to use the speakers without an amp. There are "active" speakers which have a built in amp, but a quick look at that product page and I don't think those do.

One of those cheaper DACs I recommended will perform just as good as a more pricey one. I know this doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's the way the audio industry is.

For other speaker options, check eBay for used bookshelf speakers and/or studio monitors. There's usually great deals in Europe, and going used can save a butt load of cash.

No problemo. Feel free to ask more questions if you find something that looks too good to be true.
