I see.  I have a G900 and don't have this problem, but your mouse has a couple of features mine does not, notably Surface Tuning.  Have you tried this?  Maybe it would help the mouse work with your pad:

Might just be the sensor being picky.  I've had older optical mice that would only work on a pad, but they were never picky about hard or soft surface to my mind.  Maybe surface reflectivity.

Your sensor is (probably) failing. My G700 did the exact same thing with the same steelseries cloth mousepad, then it started to not register anything on any surface. Replacement can be hard but I'm attempting it, I just ordered an Avago S9500 laser sensor from AliExpress.
