Mouse movement not detected

I bought a steelseries mouse mat (cloth) and sometimes when I move my mouse, it doesnt register the movement. When I used a hard mouse pad, all movement is registering fine. Should I clean my steelseries mat? If so how?

I've had early optical mice that would not register on anything but a mouse pad.  I've had newer laser mice that worked fine on top of anything.  What kind of mouse is it (make and model)?

Its a logitech G502.

I see.  I have a G900 and don't have this problem, but your mouse has a couple of features mine does not, notably Surface Tuning.  Have you tried this?  Maybe it would help the mouse work with your pad:

Might just be the sensor being picky.  I've had older optical mice that would only work on a pad, but they were never picky about hard or soft surface to my mind.  Maybe surface reflectivity.

Your sensor is (probably) failing. My G700 did the exact same thing with the same steelseries cloth mousepad, then it started to not register anything on any surface. Replacement can be hard but I'm attempting it, I just ordered an Avago S9500 laser sensor from AliExpress.
