Choosing the right solid state drive.

Hey there!

 

Currently in my PC I have a 1TB HHD as my boot drive and then an extra 300GB one I store most of my movies and TV shows on.

 

Im currently looking at getting a SSD as my boot drive and also my one for a few games I am currently playing, so it will only have to be 1TB absolute max, but more like 500GB. I know getting a 1TB SSD is unreasonable . I don’t really have any plans to do anything more than just game, so speed isn’t a massive concern but it’s always nice to have. 

 

But I don’t know what type of SSD I want, my budget is around £200 but again I do have some leeway above that price point, really I just need some ideas. Is it worth getting a PCI-e one over an M.2 (my motherboard does support that form factor) or should I just stick with a SATA drive?’

 

Any info will be good, thanks!

Go with a good old 2.5" drive from Samsung. Either their 850 or 860 series (not PRO). They are amazing.

The speed benefits of going with M.2 or PCI-e ones are not noticable that much, specially for a boot drive.

As @NMS mentioned above, I would also recommend the Samsung 850 Evo. You should be able to get the 500GB version with your budget even in EU.

Only 1TB I could find under 200£ quick was Mushkin Triactor 3DL 1TB, SATA 197£, it'll work well enough.

A wide selection of 500ish are, ADATA Ultimate SU800 512GB, SATA 128£, Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB, SATA 139£, Crucial MX300 525GB, M.2 127£.

There's even a nice (imo) NVMe choise ADATA XPG SX8000 512GB, M.2 157£.
