Well, speaking from experience, when I leave my ipad on charge, the adapter itself tends to get hot over long periods of charging, so the charger could potentially get too hot and cause a fire. You could also "over" charge it, which means that the life of the battery is minimised significantly, to the point where you have to leave the ipad on charge all of the time, otherwise it will go flat if you take it off of the charger. My dads computer, he left the charger in it for a long period of time, and whenever ha takes it off the charger, it will go straight to 1% and then go flat. When charging a device like a phone or ipad, make sure to charge it to 100%, then take it off charge so you dont shorten the lifespan of the battery inside of your device. Leave it on charge all of the time really shortens the lifespan of the battery and will need a replacement battery if this is done.

Even though it is first gen it won't overcharge, there is built in protection for that it will just charge to 100% then stop until about 98% then charge again, several stores use ipads as a cash register and the chargers are fine, if you use an original apple charger it will most certainly not burst into flames the thing is designed to deliver the power it can. They get hot if you charge the device and use it at the same time, but only about 60C and thats it no risk there.
