Check that you have both cables securely connected to the new drive. Plug the USB into a USB 2.0 motherboard port, not a front/case port, and select 'custom' not 'upgrade' for a clean install. Also, update the BIOS before trying to install the OS and make sure that your drive is showing up in the BIOS and that storage is set to AHCI, not RAID.
