Hello guys,

This is my first post and quite frankly I am looking for advices concerning my first pc build that will be done in one month.

I am a business consultant and gaming enthusiast that will use the pc to have fun and for work. The parts listed were already bought and the build will be done once I get home.

1 - Parts

CPU - i7 8700k

GPU - Strix 1080 ti

Motherboard - Maximus Hero X

M.2 - 960 Pro 1Tb

RAM - 2x16Gb g.skillz trident 3200

PSU - HX1000i

CPU cooling - Noctua D15

Case - Fractal Meshify C

Storage - 2Tb Firecuda

2 - Plan

I will be doing some mild OC on CPU (if it holds) and I am planning on delidding it (already have the kit + liquid metal).

I know my PSU is an overkill for my system, but I might want in a near future to go for SLI and to be prepared in case Nvidia launch some crazy power consuming card next year.

I have got a 2k 144hz G-sync monitor that will be used for playing all kind of games, but I might also use it for CAD (Catia).

I will use the pc for work too! (some programming, computational problem solution and serious excel spreadsheets).

3 - Advices I am seeking

I - Did I f****d messed up in the purchase of any components? (I know the case will be tight)

II - Since this is my first build, should I proceed with the delid + binning? How long will the Liquid Metal last? (I am an engineer with decent circuits background)

III - What do you think about getting another 960 Pro 1Tb M.2 for Raid 0? (Risks, costs, pros)

In case anyone is interested in my progress once I start the build and screw up something I will post the updates here as well!

Thanks in advance for the help!

So to answer your questions:

  1. No, your parts seem nicely priced out and you did your homework. Could have saved some on the m.2, but I get why you wanted it.
  2. If you do go ahead with it. Do it properly. Don't "half-ass" the project or you will regret it forever. Get a tool like that shown in this LTT video:
  3. Honestly I would say just save your money and get two mechanical drives and throw them in RAID 0 because you will get a much longer life out of them than the PCI-based SSD's. Further, I have no idea the ease of use of RAID for aforementioned PCI-based m.2 SSD's.

Mainline: MacBook Air M1 Display(s): Acer K272HUL; VIOTEK - GNV32DB Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech M720/K780 Sound: AirPods 3 Operating System: MacOS Phone: iPhone 13 Pro (Graphite)

The Firecuda SSHD. It's SSD part is too small (8GB) to be of any use. It could have been cheaper if a standard HDD is used. That's the only thing and it's not a serious one either.

If you have the tools then it should be safe (ish?) Make sure you seal the lid back on well while leaving an inch of gap for the air inside to get out.

960 Pro is so fast going RAID wont give any benefit other than bragging rights (or if you move >50GB of data around all the time)
