I'm in the midst of building my first top to bottom gaming PC from scratch.

As expected I've made a few errors.. One that is bugging me a bit is my memory and CPU compatibility rumors. I have heard that Ryzen has had issues with a ton of ram not performing the way it should. I sadly did not become aware of this until i had already ordered ram and placed it on my MOBO. I plan on running with it until I can afford a solution.

My question is what is the downsides of running with the current setup. My memory is not on the approved list of ram.

running a Ryzen 5 1600 3.6 (4.0oc) with 2x4gb G.Skill RipjawsV 2133 mhz

thanks in advance. Any advice moving forward would be appreciated as well

ryzen cpu performance scales with the RAM speed. faster RAM will give faster performance. This is due to the architecture of the CPU and the infinite fabric stuff.

the official support and recommend speed is 2666hz, so your 2133 one should work fine but may not give all the potential of CPU. You can try to overclock it to 2666hz.

The suggested ram speed by the community is 3000-3200hz, which gives the best price/performance.

i am able to run my corsair 8x2gb 3200 c16 kit at 2933 c14 with an R5 1600. motherboard is asus b350-f strix

it is true that Ryzen benefits from fast memory. but AFAIK performance gains aren't as much over 3200mhz, so 3200 is the sweet spot. 3200 c14 can improve your chances

so I'm hoping to have the same luck as you.

current speed is low as can go at 2133. Im sure this will work for now. But would upgrading to some 3000 or 3200 be a smart idea. I already planned on buying another kit as i have 2 empty slots still on my board.

Is your kit rated to run at 2133, or is it rated higher but only capable of 2133? What's the exact model number? Probably begins with F4. (F4-3000C15D-16GVKB for example)

I wouldn't advise mixing the ram, especially if that first kit is rated at 2133. The new kit won't run any faster.

You best bet may be to RMA and purchase a kit known to work with your board. That'll either require purchasing something on the board's QVL or doing some research. What do other people with your exact same board use? If you do decide to purchase a new kit of ram, and depending on your current kit, you should aim for at least 2666 with 3000/3200 being the sweet spot. Beyond that the improvements become less noticeable, and the cost could be better spent elsewhere for better performance gains.
