So I was fortunate enough to borrow my friends Oculus DK2 a few years ago. It was fun and all. I liked using my desktop in VR, demos were cool too and so was watching movies.

I've found myself more and more wanting to get a VR headset. I don't really have the space for the VIVE right now. I"ve only got 6ft from my desk chair to the wall behind me. So I guess I'd need to go with the rift.

What do y'all think? I'd love to just be able to lean back and watch movies and youtube. I'd love to poke around with games too. Does the novelty wear off? Is it usually always fun?

I would get a Vive. I am getting one near the end of this year. I have around a 10'x6' play area. https://www.vive.com/eu/support/category_howto/what-is-the-recommended-space-for-play-area.htmlhttps://www.vive.com/eu/support/category_howto/planning-your-play-area.html. I have tried both a Vive and Oculus Rift and I will choose the Vive over the Rift because the tracking was a lot better on the Vive. They both a significant amount of games on the Steam market and on various other places. Although I have never setup a Rift, I have seen in person how to set up a Vive and it's super easy the step by step setup program is super easy and not that complicated. These are just some of my ideas and opinions.

I have both and I don't think one is better than the other.  The Vive is better at tracking room scale although the Rift isn't bad with a third sensor.  The Rift has superior touch controllers.  I tend to use my Rift much more often as I rarely want or need the room scale experience.  Not to mention the cables put a damper on the room scale fun in a hurry anyway.  I think you'll be happy no matter which one you choose.

Yeah it happens really quickly as there is littreally nothing you can do on it

For me and my friend, it hasn't worn off. I'm getting a vive and we can use a Steam Program to play in VR together. There are a lot of games in the Steam store and yes they are pricey and they do add up but that's because of the market is smaller, the games require more to program in. Plus if both of has vives we can be at each others house and still be near a Vive if we want to play.

Should have also mentioned, none of my friends have a VR headset.

What do y'all think? I'd love to just be able to lean back and watch movies and youtube. I'd love to poke around with games too. Does the novelty wear off? Is it usually always fun?

Intro Personally I like the Rift a lot better and will be getting one during Christmas with a third sensor and also tried a Free Robo Recall demo at my nearest BestBuy. Although the tracking may be better (Idk if it's SOOOO much better but people say it's better and I haven't tried the Vive) I still like the Rift for a number of reasons.

  1. Cost Something that catches people's eyes is cost. The Vive is $600 (and used to be more) while the Rift is only $400 and $60 more for a third sensor to get roomscale, but it seems like you don't have the space. For some people, including me, I'm not poor nor rich but I'm able to spend a very good amount on games and personally, if I wanted to get the (in any case) more expensive option then I would not limit myself from spending a little more because that thing will stay with me for a long time and I think that's really dumb. If you decision tipper (idk a better word for it :)) to buy the Rift is the cost then I think you shouldn't limit yourself from buying you more favorite option because something so expensive that will stay with you for a long time deserves a little extra money.
  2. Ergonomics One of the things, if not the thing, that I like the most about the Rift are the ergonomics. The headset on both seem somewhat similar and the Rift's straps are really good (remember, never tried Vive so idk the comparison) but what's the most important are the controllers. I really dislike the fact that the Vive's controllers are big "wands" whereas the Rift has REALLLLY comfortable fitting controllers that have plenty of touch sensors that pretty much move the virtual fingers in most ways that you move your fingers making it feel so cool. You can point, thumbs up and maybe even lift only a few fingers of the front grip button (never tried doing that). The controllers on the Rift are much lighter and feel a lot more natural.
  3. Library The Rift and the Vive's libraries are both really good but the Oculus library doesn't work with the Vive but the Vive (which is steam I'm pretty sure) library works on all VR. It's sort of a little advantage but it's something.

Conclusion These are the only things I could think of but in the end it REALLY plays on opinion and what you favor more. Honestly, tracking is better on the Vive and everything but when I tried the Oculus in BestBuy I didn't see any issues, mostly because I was too adrenaline junked on this game to probably notice it --> https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/1081190428622821/ SOOO FUCKING funn. And being adrenaline high on games is what I'll mostly be doing with it. Back to my point, although the tracking may be better it's still not really something I would probably notice and really care about. For me, I think the controllers are a MUCHHH bigger win. Being able to really feel like you're hands are there is something I prefer a LOTTTT. In the end, it really depends on what YOU want and what may cater better to your needs and/or your limitations, in your case: space. Just pick one you like better for stuff you like more and enjoy the heck out of it. In the end you're gonna enjoy either one, just remember to go on the Oculus site and check for Demos nearby and try to find a Vive Demo if they exist and remember that the Oculus controllers are a REALLL big plus.

Appreciate the input! My current "office" is in my family's print shop since I'm living with my parents at the moment and there's no room in their house for my PC. I really wish this stuff was easier to demo ya know? Like I'm sure I'd love room scale VR but I'm not into spending an extra 200 on something I'm not sure that I'll use to it's full potential.

Actuallly... the extra 200 is for the Vive just to make sure you know, roomscale is so that you can walk around a "room" instead of walking a few feet to the left or right. If you get the rift and decide you wanna upgrade to roomscale, drop 60$ a month or two later and there you go! Roomscale VR. :) You're welcome on the input, it's just some things aren't really noticed by some people looking into VR and I also really wanted to make a point about the idea about a little more money for something more expensive because you like it a lot more is something to consider because it's gonna stay for a long time. I just really recommend the Rift for the amazing Controllers!! And please make sure to try a Demo. If you take until after Christmas to decide then I can give you my input about my experience with it. :) Glad to help!
