Will this setup work?

Yah, it will work just fine as you have it in the diagram, no changes needed.

Get a nice 5 or 8 port gigabit switch and you're good to go :)

Hi everyone

Recently I build a few systems for my home like a home PC, Media Player and I have some future plans for the networking in my house in which I want to include a Media server. I have attached an image for reference of what I really want.

I was thinking of connecting an 8 port gigabit switch (for sharing between systems) to my router (100mbps max). That means I'll be using 5 ports in the gigabit switch for sharing between systems and 1 port for internet. I am concerned that the 1 port for internet connection might get saturated.

Will it be fine to set up this way? Please let me know how can I improve.

Note: I want this set up to be budget friendly as I don't want anything overkill.

My internet connection is 25Mbps

Gigabit speed for file sharing and media works for me.

Do check the image attached.

Thank You

I’d reverse the gigabit switch and the router placement, but keep the same pc/whatever else connected to the gigabit switch.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Are you saying place the switch before the router and connected right to the internet?

That's a terrible idea.

The fact that any device connected to the switch will get an external IP and since 99% of residential connections are limited to 1 public IP, nothing else will get out.

Edit:

I see you made an edit, ignore my post as well :D

Ohk, I just hope it doesn't saturate the one cable from the router to switch for internet too much. :)

Keep it simple.

Nah, if most of the stuff is going between devices connected to the switch then you won't even hit the link to the router
