hi everyone,

this is my first time manually overclocking and I wasn't sure which vcore should I start with and whats the difference between adaptive and manual?

I have an asus z270e strix board, a fractal design Celsius s24,  a 32gb 3000mhz trident z rgb ram ,and an asus gtx 1080 strix gpu.

right now, I used 4.9 ghz on adaptive mode with 1.25v and ran aida64 for an hour without crashing (blue screen but the PC freezes for a couple of seconds) my temps reached to 85c.
this is what my system looked like after my test

I will do about 4 hour stress test with aida64 but I did not want to waste my time if I screwed something up.

one of the things I noticed is that my pc started to lag for a couple of seconds (almost like dropping frames in games but not in game), is that normal?

Generally 7700K's are able to do 4.8GHZ at 1.35v, I don't like Aida64 as a stress test since it doesn't really fully stress test it. Use OCCT or P95 with custom FPT settings. 1.25V with 85C is already an concern, you sure that its at 1.25V or it's 1.25V base and goes to around 1.3V?

The problem with full stress tests like Prime95 is that you never experience that kind of load so it's just an enormous amount of heat with no real world comparison.

1.25v that goes up around 1.3v

You can do setting FFT settings in P95. OCCT gives an generalization if you don't set like AVX or so.

So I set it to a 5ghz as manual with 1.3v and I let aida64 run for a while and the temps reached close to 90c, should I be worried?

Hell yes, you should be worried at 90c. Dial the voltage back and maybe try 4.8 and run the test again. If that works, then try 4.9 and test it again until its stable but 5ghz just doesnt work on ur cooler/cpu i guess.

Ok I changed it to 4.9 ghz with 1.275v and it has been running for 25 minutes so far the highest temp it reached is 83c but the core voltage reading is 1.277-1.293v is it normal for manual to do that?

so just an update, right now I'm running a 4.7 ghz at 1.245v and it seems to be stable with max temps reached 81c while running aida64 for about 4 hours.

the only thing I noticed is the pc seems to lag randomly almost like dropping frames for a few seconds, also video playback on chrome stutters frequently. I used windows memory diagnostic tool to check if my ram has been damaged from the over clock and there is no problem detected.

Update: i upped my voltage to 1.25v and my lagging problem seems to be gone.

This CPU is just really hot...

A few months ago, when I only got it paired with H80i V2, without delidding, I managed to get it oced to 5GHz on about 85C max temp with an adaptive voltage of 1.315 on BIOS.

After delidding, where I live in the winter, sometimes it does not even reach the 70C.

You should probably check if your AIO is mounted correctly.

Anyway, I would go for a delid but most of the people will not and for obvious reasons. But once again, my main point is that an oced 7700K is hot af,, from my experience.

I was able to reach 5ghz on 1.3v adaptive but it was too hot.

I live in Arizona and it's hot righ now so that might effect the temps.

I'm pretty sure I mounted my aio correctly and it's in push pull but I used the stock thermal compound, so should I change it and if so what should I use?

If by stock thermal compound you mean the one that came with your AIO, then you should not really change it because that would not improve the cooling performance that much.

Did you place your AIO rad as exhaust or as intake?

I would place the rad in the front of the case so it will act as intake, if you have the room for it. This might improve and make your CPU temp lower by up to about even 6C.

Honestly, your system could be perfect and installed correctly, and still this CPU would produce a lot of heat.

As I said, temps are pretty shitty with this CPU without a delid.

My case is phanteks enthoo pro m and the rad is in the front.

I thought about deliding but I think I would do it in 3-4 months when I have free time.

When you delid, make sure you use the right tools such as a liquid thermal compound and a special tool for the delidding process itself, for the safest result. Using a knife or the vice method are not safe as the rockitcool delidding tool.

Good luck with that and I hope the some other people will give you more and better advice than what I wrote.
