WLAN router behaving weirdly

Our network setup consists of a full working system on one side of the house and a single Ethernet cable running to the other side. When we plug in a switch and a router to this cable, some devices can connect and some can't. We plugged the router into a different cable for testing (which was connected to a switch) and that worked with other devices. Why is this:

Need more info, Router, Switch, Cable type and how are they connected.

What is the category rating of the cable you ran to the opposite side of your home? If it's not legitimate CAT5e or better, this could be your issue. I have personally had problems where I could not use certain hardware on a CAT5 cable that claimed to be CAT5e. Ended up re-pulling a CAT6 cable and all was solved.

 

Specifically, It was a gigabit switch that refused to connect using the cable. I had two 10/100 switches that could use it just fine.
