FPS Drop in Overwatch after 20-30min

MiC2508

Hi all

I have a problem that my FPS drops after 20-30min of playing Overwatch. I get 120-150FPS in game until it drops to 30-50 FPS. According to MSI Afterburner, my CPU is constantly at 80-100% but it is an old AMD Phenom II 1090t so that I see as "normal" I also upgraded to a Zotac GTX 1070 AMP extreme to play at 1440p on a 144Hz monitor. GPU is running good, I did some benchmarking and no problem there on the FPS/Temp side. I also turned of power saving mode in the BIOS. I cannot see my CPU Temps in MSI Afterburner, could it be that it is getting to hot? Thermal Throttle maybe?

Here some more specs:

AMD Phenom II 1090t

Zotac GTX 1070 AMP extreme

Mobo: ASRock Extreme 3

8GB of DDR3 RAM at 1333Mhz from Corsair

120GB SSD Samsung EVO for Win10 and Overwatch

PSU BeQuiet Pure Power 10 600W

Any thoughts on this?

My CPU is installed for 5 year now. Should I replace the thermal paste?

Definetly sounds like CPU throttling.

Check temps, if it is throttling the CPU will downclock to lower temps.

That means worse performance.

Remember to quote!

Applying new thermal paste might help, which cooler are you using?

I use the Scythe Mugen 3. I put all parts in a new case and cleaned everything incl. the fins of the cooler. I am running the CPU with an OC to 3.4Ghz. Should I also remove that? I will try to monitor temps of the CPU this evening. At what Temp should the CPU throttle?

Probably nothing wrong with the CPU, just the cooling sollution.

It seems from what I can find that the limit is about 60c before it throttles.

Monitor temps, the cooler might not be enough to cool it.

I also had no issues at 1080p put since I upgraded to a 1070 and a 1440p monitor I have some issues. Unfortunately my budget is to small now for a new CPU with MoBo and RAM.

Thanks all for the quick help! I will see what my temps I am getting.

If the CPU gets to hot I will try to reapply thermal past first and if that does not work consider buying a new cooler. Maybe with an upgrade to Ryzen in mind for the future. :)

@mok Thanks for your share of CPU info. I could not get my CPU past 3.5Ghz it was not running stable. Maybe my chip wants to retire soon.

i would suggest lower your in game settings to high/medium or limit your FPS to 144fps in game - see if your still experience fps drops

UPDATE:

As suggested, I did monitor my CPU temperatures. I did run Prime95 to stress my CPU and at the same time ran MSI Afterburner GPU Stresstest to get also the hot air from my GPU. I got my CPU up to 60.5°C after 45min of this. It was still running at 100% without throttle. I need to mention that I did remove the OC before I did this test to get “lowest” temperatures for my CPU.

Therefore, as around 60°C is the temperature where it could start to throttle I guess my problem is the CPU temp.

I did set my case fans to 100% and got the temperatures down to app. 55°C. With those settings, I played for >1h without the mentioned drops to 30-50FPS. Of course, I got lower overall FPS (80-90) but I can live with that until I upgrade my CPU.

Thanks all for the help. As always quick and helpful people around here. Keep it up!
