So, i'll start by saying this is NOT the infamous "It says i'm connected but it's also *telling me* i have no internet access". I put those two words in asterisks because in MY case, I am hardwired to the router, I have an IP address, and it's saying that *i am* connected to the internet. However, opening any of my browsers does not allow me to get to any sites, it just kinda sits there and never loads. It's also not just with browsers. I tried updated virus definitions and no dice, both in avast and malwarebytes. Seems like it's global.

The router is fine, I am on another machine on the same network. I have tried the usual run of the mill "sfc /scannow" "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" commands and nada. Next step is to run chkdsk /r and also run a scan with sophos virus removal tool. Anyone have any ideas?

It was f!cking avast. Disabled "web shield" and boom, i'm back....

@BrendanReed

That happens sometimes, unfortunately. If you want a good, free antivirus, Bitdefender has been a good one for me and it has an extremely low resource usage.
